Salary: $53,000-$62,000 annual salary

Paul Smith’s College is a private, four-year institution with approximately 750 students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. Known as the “College of the Adirondacks,” we are the only baccalaureate and graduate degree granting institution located within the six-million-acre, world-famous, “forever-wild” Adirondacks in New York’s North Country.

Position Description:
Paul Smith’s College invites applicants for a full-time faculty appointment, starting in the fall of 2025 to help support our growing Disaster Management & Response program. This position (Assistant/Associate Professor of Disaster Management & Response) has a primary focus teaching courses including Fundamentals of Disaster Management, Disaster Operations & Recovery, Risk Management & Liability, and Social Dimensions of Disaster. The position is a full-time/nine-month appointment. Other expectations include research and outreach to address regional disaster management issues, student advising, program development, and advising student clubs associated with the academic program. Initial rank will depend on qualifications.
Minimum qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position will have training and practical, real-world experience in disaster management & response, a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate level where faculty provide personal guidance to undergraduate students, the capacity to teach a variety of courses, demonstrable research/outreach interests in disaster management, and demonstrated record of professional involvement with his/her community. Therefore, candidates for these positions must have (1) a graduate degree in a related field or an equivalent CEM designation, (2) documentation of effectively providing personalized, experiential teaching (formal & informal settings), and (3) a record of productive research and/or outreach and professional development. Candidates must possess the ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.
Preferred qualifications:
Candidates with a terminal degree in a related field (such as Homeland Security, Emergency Management, Fire Science, or Public Administration) will be given higher consideration. Paul Smith’s College particularly seeks candidates who have experience teaching at a small college and have successfully delivered introductory and advanced courses in disaster management that meet the needs of students with a range of academic abilities both in the major and in other majors such as forestry, sustainability, or natural resource management. Certification as a CPR/First Aid instructor or in technical rescue is a plus. Successful candidates will demonstrate an interest in facilitating career success of students through developmental advising and involvement in student chapters of professional societies.
