As an accredited public health department, we're seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Clinical Laboratory Technologist to join the Division of Medical-Clinical Services, Public Health Laboratory located in Decatur, GA.
The Division of Microbiology at the Georgia Public Health Laboratory (GPHL) is responsible for detecting, identifying, and reporting communicable diseases in the State of Georgia. The Division is responsible for maintaining expertise and capability in a wide variety of public health microbiology specialties. These include Mycobacteriology Reference Bacteriology, Enteric Bacteriology, Environmental Microbiology, Mycology, Parasitology, Virology, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Antimicrobial Resistance surveillance, and Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD).
The GPHL is seeking a laboratory professional to join the Bacteriology unit in the Microbiology Department. The incumbent will serve as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist for Bacteriology. This position reports directly to the Associate Manager of Bacteriology.
The incumbent will perform a wide range of duties that include all aspects of specimen receipt, processing, and testing. The incumbent will also ensure the completeness, accuracy, and timeliness of reporting results and help with tracking the lab inventory. The candidate will collaborate with internal and external partners, including laboratory colleagues in various departments, the quality assurance team, epidemiologists, medical professionals, local clinical labs, and professionals at the CDC. To be considered for this position, the individual must meet the qualifications for testing personnel in a high-complexity laboratory under CLIA.
Job Responsibilities:
+ Perform steps in the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phases of both diagnostic and surveillance testing on human clinical specimens.
+ Process stool cultures for enteric bacterial pathogens.
+ Perform specimen identification.
+ Perform wet lab activities for Whole genome sequencing (WGS) thereby supporting CDC programmatic activities such as PulseNet and ARLN (Antimicrobial resistance lab network).
+ Perform and document quality control and quality assurance in all areas.
+ Review and evaluate data before the release of results.
+ Utilize customer service skills when reporting verbal results to submitters.
+ Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulatory standards such as the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), OSHA, and other federal and state regulations.
+ Assist in training new staff.
+ Adhere to policies and principles regarding the proper use and storage of laboratory reagents and supplies.
+ Adhere to policies and principles regarding the use, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory equipment.
+ Complies with institutional biosafety and chemical hygiene plans and works safely with hazardous (physical/chemical/biological) materials within a laboratory facility.
+ Participate in required workplace training regarding the safety of the physical environment.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.

Associate degree in a related science area from an accredited college or university, certification as a Medical Technologist, MT (ASCP), and three (3) years of job-related science experience; or Associate degree and two (2) years of experience at the lower level Medical/Clinical Specialist 2 (LSP011) or equivalent position
