    Job Overview:

    The Clerk of Scales is responsible for the operations of the jockeys' room while supervising all related activities, weighing each jockey before and after each race to ensure that assigned weights as specified on racing program are carried during each race as required by NYSGC §4033 and NYSGC §4036.

     

    Responsible for reporting rider changes and weight discrepancies to stewards, coordinates jockey room operations with Assistant Clerk of Scales, including overseeing silks room, supervising and scheduling of valets; assigns valets to jockeys; reports suspicious or illegal behavior to Stewards.

    Essential Functions:

    • Confirms the presence of all jockeys in the jockeys' room at the appointed time.

    • Verifies that all jockeys have a current jockey's license issued by the commission.

    • Ensures all riders report for appropriate drug and/or alcohol testing at the appointed time.

    • Verifies and electronically logs the correct weight of jockey at the time of weighing out and weighing in and reports any discrepancies to the stewards immediately.

    • At weigh-in prior to each race, instructs valets to add or remove weights to saddle pockets to ensure the jockey’s weight matches the program.

    • Oversees the security of the jockeys' room including the conduct of jockeys and their attendants.

    • Maintains a complete and full understanding and enforces all NYSGC Rules, HISA Rules and New York Racing Association, Inc. House Rules.

    • Reports to the stewards any infractions of the rules with respect to weight, weighting, riding equipment, or conduct.

    • Ensures all riders are up to date with physicals, baseline concussion tests, and other health related issues.

    • Maintains the record of applicable winning races on all apprentice certificates in the meet.

    • Release apprentice jockey certificates, upon the jockey's departure or upon the conclusion of the race meet.

    • Communicates any changes in jockeys to Horsemen’s Bookkeeper to ensure that jockeys are paid appropriately.

    • Ensures the safekeeping of all racing colors.

    • Supervises all valets and the issuance of numbered saddle cloths and equipment for each horse.

    • Ensures the accuracy of the scales by confirming they have valid certification certificates prior to each race day.

    • Transmits to the Stewards all complaints, protests, objections, or disputes.

    • Maintains a film list of riders whom the Stewards feel should review such films.

    • Assists, as required, in the daily operation of the racing office.

    • Oversees the maintenance and proper usage of equipment in the Jockey Room and calls for repairs when necessary.

    • Maintains a schedule for valets and all other jockey room employees throughout the racing season including vacations, holidays, etc.

    • All other duties as assigned by management.

    Qualifications:

    Education (minimum): Minimum high school diploma or GED

     

    Experience: 5-7 years of experience in various roles in the racing industry. Previous experience as a Racing Official mandatory with at least 2 years of experience as a Clerk of Scales or Assistant Clerk of Scales or similar position.

     

    Other Requirements: Previous experience managing others. High level of credibility, professionalism, and integrity.

     

    Management skills.

     

    Knowledgeable in New York State Gaming Commission Rules, HISA rules, and NYRA House Rules.

     

    Familiarity and comfort with high level of activity in the Jockey Room.

     

    Strong attention to detail.

     

    Ability to multi-task.

     

    Organizational skills.

     

    Excellent communication skills.

     

    Ability to connect with people from all backgrounds and levels of management.

    Summary of Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

    This job requires working on site at all NYRA racetracks and working a racing schedule. In addition some of the responsibilities will require the employee to work outside and to walk up and down stairs several times per day.

     

    Pay Range / Salary: 85k - 110k
