NURSING SUPERVISOR (University Hospital, 6B Adult Medicine Unit)
Job Summary
6B is a 32-bed unit that provides care primarily to four Internal Medicine Services delivering high-quality and evidence based care. We specialize in the care of adult patients who are acutely ill, managing a wide range of medical conditions or recovering from surgery. The unit provides in-depth treatment for patients with multiple chronic illnesses including Sepsis, AKI, Pneumonia, Hepatic failure, or COPD.

Responsibilities*
Assist the Clinical Nursing Director on 6B in the planning and management of 6B patient care services.
+ To assist the department director in planning and management of the unit and the provision of patient care.
+ To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education, and research.
+ Coordinate between nursing leadership and patient care activities consistent with the mission and goal statements of University of Michigan Health.
+ Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.
+ Reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director.
Personnel Management:
+ Plan, assign, and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
+ Participate in interviewing, selecting, and orienting nursing and support staff.
+ Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
+ Participate in developing, implementing, and revising individual performance plans.
+ Facilitate open communication channels with nurse leaders, peers, staff, and physicians.Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and leadership team members as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.
Clinical Practice:
+ Provide clinical support, assessment, mentoring, coaching, and evaluation of staff.
+ Mentor and lead charge nurses to support unit efficiency, monitor adequacy of resources, and ensure patient safety.
Management of Clinical Area:
+ Participate in developing and implementing unit or area goals and objectives.
+ Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
+ Participate in planning and problem-solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
+ Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
+ Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
+ Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
+ Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.
+ Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks.
+ Collaborate with the Educational Nurse Coordinators to implement competency-based evaluation.
+ Participate in developing unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.
Quality Assurance and Research:
+ Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
+ Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
+ Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.
+ Assure and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

Required Qualifications*
Required Educational Requirements:
Applicant must meet one of the following:
* Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR
* Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing.
+ Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
+ Minimum five (5) years RN experience.
+ Minimum two (2) years recent (within the last 5 years) experience on a medical-surgical unit.
+ Completion of a Nurse Leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
+ Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability including charge nurse, team leader, advancement in professional development framework, or other management/leadership experience.

Desired Qualifications*
+ Master of Science Nursing
+ Previous nursing supervisory experience
+ Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices
+ Consultative and teaching skills
+ At least Five (5) years of acute care inpatient RN experience
+ Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
+ Demonstrate ability to be effective, positive change agent
+ Demonstrate flexibility related to unit staffing and patient care needs
+ Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Administrators, Nurse Managers, Physicians, Peers, Subordinates, and other UMHS departments and groups
+ Evidence of ability to assess, interpret, and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively
+ Computer competency including Word, Excel, and be able to extract data from University supported computer data bases.
+ Demonstrated understanding and support of patient and family-centered care
+ Committee membership experience
Work Schedule
Hours/Week: 40 hours/week
Days/Shift/Hours: Primarily evening shift with the flexibility to cover the needs of the unit, participate in unit priority initiatives, and other leadership responsibilities as assigned.
