    Job Summary

    The Roy Lab at the Moran Eye Center is seeking a motivated **Lab Technician** to support ongoing projects. The lab is focused on understanding the cellular and circuit basis of retinal visual processing. We use animal models, viral vectors, electrophysiology, in vivo ocular imaging, and molecular biology, to answer questions about neural circuit functions, as well as develop translational approaches to blinding disorders such as glaucoma.

     

    The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and experience of at least 3 years working in a research laboratory setting. Experience with animal handling (mouse, rat), colony management, dissecting and processing biological tissues for immunohistochemistry and/or molecular assays, handling biological/chemical waste, and routine lab management tasks, is needed. Strong communication skills, assisting lab members with animal procedures, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment will be considered strengths.

     

    We are a dynamic, interdisciplinary and collaborative lab. While the atmosphere is collegial, our research is fast-paced and spans multiple ongoing projects. We value individuals who can learn quickly, work independently, and meet project timelines when needed. Hands-on training will be provided by the PI and senior lab members. Strong performance may lead to opportunities for increased responsibility and promotion within the lab.

    Responsibilities

    Essential Functions:

    + Assist with ordering supplies, inventory management, and preparation of reagents and

    * Assist with animal procedures including handling, anesthesia, injections, and OCT imaging.

    + Manage mouse colony and perform routine genotyping.

    + Dissect and process retinal tissues for immunohistochemistry, mounting tissues on slides, and confocal imaging.

    + Perform image analysis using software such as ImageJ ( FIJI ) and Zeiss Zenblue.

    + Maintain records of lab purchases, and ensure compliance with chemical and biological safety protocols.

    + Perform literature reviews for projects.

    + Coordinate with lab members, animal care specialists and veterinarians for procedures and animal monitoring.

    + Participate in lab meetings and group discussions.

    Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:

    Collaborative, supportive, fast-paced. Wet lab and digital work. There will be exposure to animals.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or other scientific disciplines in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.

     

    OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification may be required by some departments.

    Preferences

     

    + >2 years of work experience in a research lab environment.

    + Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, neuroscience or a related field.

    + Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.

    + Prior work with animal models – handling and/or procedures.

    + Responsible, communicative, and independent.

    + Quick learner, coordinate with lab members, organize data and keep meticulous records of procedures

    + Experience with handling and disposal of biological specimens, solution preparation, tissue fixation and processing.

    + Experience with (or deep conceptual understanding of) epifluorescence and confocal microscopy. Familiarity with image analysis or basic bioinformatics tools is a plus.
