    Job Description

    Position Title: Mechanic Helper/Grounds Crew

     

    Salary Range: Regionally Competitive

     

    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

     

    Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director of Facilities/Director of Buildings and Grounds/Grounds Foreman

     

    Summary: The Grounds Crew position combines the responsibilities of supporting the maintenance and repair of school grounds with assisting in the upkeep and functioning of equipment used for grounds care. This role involves assisting in the operation and maintenance of various grounds equipment, including lawnmowers, tractors, snowplows, and other specialized tools. The individual will be responsible for maintaining athletic fields, playgrounds, and other outdoor facilities by performing tasks such as field lining, turf care, irrigation system checks, and snow removal.

     

    In addition, the position includes providing mechanical support to ensure the optimal performance of ground equipment, conducting basic repairs, troubleshooting, and maintaining machinery. The role requires working closely with other maintenance staff, responding to maintenance requests, and assisting with general repairs as needed for athletic complexes, playgrounds, and other areas. The position also requires ensuring proper operation of delivery trucks, managing supplies, and handling equipment used

     

    for ground maintenance. The ideal candidate will have a strong willingness to learn, an ability to work in a team, and the flexibility to handle a variety of tasks in a fast-paced outdoor environment

    Responsibilities

    + Perform routine maintenance and repairs to athletic fields, playgrounds, and other outdoor facilities, including turf care, irrigation system checks, and fertilization programs

    + Assist in the preparation, lining, and maintenance of athletic fields, including football, soccer, baseball, softball fields, and tracks, ensuring they are safe and ready for use.

    + Operate and maintain grounds equipment, including lawnmowers, tractors, snowplows, 4x4 trucks, and other specialized machinery to ensure the efficiency and safety of the grounds.

    + Mandatory snow plowing.

    + Support snow removal efforts, including the use of 5-ton dump trucks with snow plows and other snow removal equipment, ensuring safe and accessible walkways and parking lots during winter months.

    + Collaborate with athletic directors and coordinators to meet athletic field and facilities expectations, ensuring fields are prepared and maintained for events and practices.

    + Assist in the setup and breakdown of outdoor events, including fencing, goal posts, backstops, and other facility needs for sporting events.

    + Conduct regular inspections of grounds equipment and facilities to identify potential issues or areas requiring maintenance, and recommend repairs or improvements.

    + Assist with managing the delivery, transportation, and receipt of supplies and materials for grounds maintenance and building operations.

    + Work closely with the Maintenance Department and other staff to support general building repairs, including fencing, goal posts, and outdoor structures.

    + Maintain proper storage and handling of ground equipment, tools, and materials, ensuring they are in good condition and securely stored.

    + Respond to emergency calls related to ground maintenance and repair, addressing issues in a timely and efficient manner.

    + Participate in ongoing professional development and training sessions to improve skills and stay current with best practices in groundskeeping and facility maintenance.

    + Perform related duties as required or assigned.

    Qualifications

    + Required Experience or Training: The candidate must be a high school graduate or equivalent, with a minimum of two years of experience in building and grounds maintenance. Basic computer skills are required, and the candidate must possess a valid CDL license. Additionally, the ability to lift up to 60 pounds and successfully pass a pre-employment lifting test is necessary for this position.

    + Desired Experience or Training: Preferred qualifications include post-secondary training related to general construction and maintenance. Experience with truck, trailer, and delivery operations is also desirable. Candidates should be proficient in computer skills, including the ability to access the internet, send and receive electronic emails, and manage documents.

    + Special Requirements: The candidate must have a general knowledge of all aspects of the construction trades, methods, and practices as they apply to school facilities. An ability to estimate and control maintenance costs, as well as stimulate cooperation among fellow employees, is crucial. Strong communication skills are necessary to provide feedback on work in progress and to ensure good customer service is maintained.

     

    Working Conditions

     

    + Mental Demands: Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, prioritize tasks, and respond to facility-related issues in a timely and effective manner. Requires the ability to maintain awareness of safety protocols, use sound judgment when operating equipment or handling cleaning agents, and adapt to changing schedules or emergencies. Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are essential.

    + Physical Demands: Must be able to work in confined spaces, on ladders, rooftops, and in various indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to lift 60 pounds without assistance and safely handle tools and equipment for extended periods.

    + Environmental Conditions: Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, including garages, maintenance areas, and occasionally on district grounds. The position involves regular exposure to noise, grease, oils, fuel, vehicle exhaust, and mechanical tools or equipment. Tasks may require working in awkward or confined spaces, lifting heavy parts, and standing or bending for extended periods. Work may be performed in varying weather conditions, and the individual must be available for routine and emergency repairs as needed. Proper safety equipment and procedures are essential to ensure personal and workplace safety. Must be able to handle stress.
