Job Description

Purpose

Job Summary
Incumbent will ensure account and claim information contains comprehensive and accurate data to provide for timely billing and optimal reimbursement for services. Prepares and submits insurance claims by hard copy and electronically. Will review and adjust accounts to ensure accurate and thorough billing of claims; monitors and ensure timely payment of bills. Assists the pharmacy technicians in the filling and dispensing of patients’ prescriptions under direct pharmacist supervision. Assists the pharmacy technicians with triaging phone calls, inventory management, customer service, and other duties assigned by supervisor.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
+ Prepares and submits Insurance claims to all third-party payers for all patients who receive care at the KIC Tribal Health Clinic.
+ Identifies, collects, and tracks pertinent information on those patients with third-party coverage.
+ Completes in correct format and submits appropriate document billing form using predetermined rates for those patients with alternate resource coverage to appropriate third-party insurance carriers for patient visits.
+ Assures follow up on all outstanding reimbursable insurance bills with insurance companies to assure maximum collection on each bill from third-party health plan carriers to recover maximum dollars.
+ Responds in final form to all correspondence generated by third-party insurance carriers.
+ Posts the accounts receivables and explanation of benefits into the billing package received from insurance carriers.
+ Serves as a liaison between the KIC Clinic, patients and other health care providers in the collections of alternate resource information.
+ Develops and maintains cooperative relationships between IHS and tribally managed facilities and with other agencies to assist in the exchange of information.
+ R eceives cross training in the other pharmacy technician related duties, providing backup coverage during absence of other positions and to provide breaks on a daily basis.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)
+ Education: High school diploma or equivalent
+ Experience minimum 1 year Pharmacy Technician experience OR 1 year experience in healthcare coding and billing
+ A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may substitute for education and experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.
+ Certification and/or License: Must possess or be able to acquire a current Pharmacy Technician license from the State of Alaska Board of Pharmacy prior to employment start date.
Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)
+ Additional training/courses in Accounting, Computers, Medical Terminology, CPT and ICD-10 coding.
+ 1+ year accounting and/or general office experience.
+ Specialized Experience (preferred): Experience gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience should have provided a basic knowledge of:
+ Pharmaceutical nomenclature,
+ Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals,
+ Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures, and
+ Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.
+ National Pharmacy Technician certification preferred.
+ Experience in community clinic preferred and a strong commitment to multi-disciplinary teamwork.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
+ Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.
+ Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.
+ Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.
+ Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.
+ Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).
+ Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.
+ Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.
+ Ability to work independently as well as with teams.
+ Knowledge of accounting, reception, typing, and filing.
+ Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10 coding, CPT coding, office procedures.
+ Skilled in office organization on minor to medium complexity tasks.
+ Ability to utilize maximum degree of professionalism and diplomacy with those who may be experiencing a high degree of stress, both mentally and/or physically (both patients and co-workers).
+ Ability to communicate professionally over the phone and in person in a positive and clear manner with patients, clinic staff, vendors, insurance companies, employees of other healthcare facilities, and students.
+ Ability to simultaneously manage multiple tasks, including phone calls, computer operations, and in-person visitors.
+ Ability to obtain personal information (demographics, employment, insurance information) from patients in a respectful and skilled manner.
+ Ability to be flexible in order to perform at the highest level as a team player.
+ Ability to take direction from supervisor and/or designee.
+ Ability to work easily and in a friendly manner with the general public and occasionally handle hostile or disgruntled patients.
+ Knowledge of procedures and regulations applicable to working in the pharmacy/clinic setting and working with patient charts.
+ Must be able to work independently on tasks not requiring immediate oversight by a pharmacist.
+ Ability to interpret, monitor, and enforce pharmacy standards.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. The noise level in the work environment is usually average.
The environment involves the usual risks and stress of an ambulatory health care facility. The employee may be exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions for employees such as blood drawing for screening of various diseases such as hepatitis, required immunizations, etc. are necessary. The employee is occasionally subject to verbal abuse, threats, and physical violence from angry, hostile, or disgruntled patients and/or family members.
The work is mostly sedentary with some walking and climbing of stairs, carrying of files, or other documents and light supplies, bending and stooping to perform filing. Work is performed in an office with limited storage, filing and workspace. People asking questions/directions frequently interrupt incumbent.
Conditions of Hire
+ May be required to possess and maintain a valid driver's license or capable of obtaining one, as well as be insurable by KIC’s company insurance.
