    Summary:

    The Manager for Clinical Education is responsible for the strategic planning, development, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs and professional development initiatives for nursing staff and other clinical personnel. This role ensures that educational strategies support the organization’s goals, enhance clinical competency, promote evidence-based practice, and foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

     

    The manager serves as a leader and mentor, collaborating with department managers, clinical educators, and interdisciplinary teams to assess learning needs, implement training programs, and evaluate outcomes to ensure high-quality patient care and staff performance. This position also oversees onboarding and orientation of new clinical staff, compliance with regulatory education requirements, and ongoing professional development aligned with current standards of care and organizational priorities.

     

    In addition to leading education initiatives, this manager is instrumental in advancing nursing excellence by promoting Pathway to Excellence standards and continuous quality improvement. The manager also oversees the management of the nursing career ladder program (PACE), supporting career progression, role transition, and leadership development among clinical staff.

     

    The position holds primary responsibility for the planning, coordination, hiring, and evaluation of the CNA education and training program, nursing schools and student nurse programs and placement, the Earn to Learn program, MOAB, nurse residency, international nurse onboarding, simulation programs, the nurse externship program, and management of the Healthstream educational platform.

    Responsibilities

    + Provides direction to staff maintaining compliance with regulations and legislation affecting the unit's delivery of patient care and overall operations.

    + In Collaboration with the Vice President, prepares individual unit operating and capital budgets, ensuring that they are consistent with organizational fiscal targets.

    + Structures unit positions for the effective handling of work objectives within the financial parameters of the operating budget.

    + In conjunction with the Vice President, develops programs, policies, procedures, protocols, and standards that describe the work accomplished by the unit(s).

    + Supports the planning and implementation of education to meet all licensing and regulatory requirements, as well as unit-based staff competency requirements.

    + Leads initiatives on the unit to change structure, systems, skill mix, or processes to more effectively support the business strategy of the Patient Care Services division.

    + Sets challenging goals with staff for their development, assigning clear responsibilities and accountabilities, and inspiring work efforts through personal example.

    + Maintains a safe environment for healthcare workers, patients, and/or visitors complying with Northern Light Health policies and procedures; reviews, documents and addresses all incidents and safety violations within area of responsibility; reports all lost time due to reported work injuries within 24 hours to local Human Resources Business Partner or Safety contact; supports and facilitates open and communication among Northern Light Health employees, non-employed healthcare workers, patients and visitors, reporting and addressing patient and environmental safety concerns.

    + May perform other duties upon request.

    Detailed Responsibilities

    • Daily management and evaluation of +/- 60 FTEs.

    • Engagement in personal professional development.

    • Monitoring of regulatory compliance in education and clinical practices.

    • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and represent the education department with leadership and integrity.

    • Coordinate and manage the Earn to Learn program.

    • Facilitate management of the MOAB (Management of Aggressive Behavior) classes.

    • A member of the NL EMMC workplace violence committee.

    • Oversight of the nurse residency program.

    • Manage the TIENS program, onboarding and orientation of international RNs.

    • Assist in the development of nurse leader simulations, ensuring scheduling of all nurse leaders annually.

    • Serves as the primary nurse planner for NLH system-wide continued education credits.

    • Primary contact for schools of nursing, provides oversight for clinical placements.

    • Supervise the CNA program, ensuring compliance with State of Maine regulations.

    • Oversight of the Earn to Learn program, including advertising, hiring, and managing schedules.

    • Coordination of resuscitation classes at NL EMMC including BLS, ACLS, and PALS.

    • Management of preceptor and charge nurse classes.

    • Oversight of clinical orientation for new hires, create orientation schedules and develop/approve the content delivered.

    • Collaboration with Work Health, Employee Loss and Prevention, POCT Lab, HR, and Patient Experience teams.

    • Management of onboarding for all traveler RN and CNAs.

    • Management of, assign, and monitor the HealthStream platform and modules for all clinical staff including locums, travelers, and contract staff.

    • Coordination of the Nurse Extern summer program.

    • Manage voucher programs for nursing certifications.

    • Organization of job shadows for students.

    • Oversee the clinical affiliation agreements for all non-provider roles.

    • Collaborate with Eastern Maine Community College to provide nursing instructors for four student cohorts.

    • Co-chair of the EMMC Evidence-Based Practice and Research Council.

    • Serve as voting member of the NL EMMC IRB.

    • Oversight of the Education Department’s budget and resource allocation.
