    Phlebotomist Lead

     

    LAB-PHLEBOTOMY & OTHER (Billings Clinic Main Campus)

    Employment Status: Full-Time (.75 or greater)

     

    Hours per Pay Period: 1.00 = 80 hours every two weeks (Non-Exempt)

     

    Starting Wage DOE: $19.68 - 24.60

     

    The Lead Phlebotomist is a leader to the centralized Phlebotomy staff in the clinic and hospital settings. In this role, you will have the opportunity to not only grow your own career in the laboratory but to influence the staff you lead and the leadership of the Laboratory. You will participate in training fellow phlebotomists and other supervisors in the laboratory. You will create work schedules, productivity reports and assist with coverage in the department. You will learn about employee relations, recruitment and writing policies. You will be a resource to phlebotomists, providing assistance on procedural questions and resolving problems that may arise. You will also be able to keep up your phlebotomy skills by continuing to perform benchwork.

     

    Essential Job Functions

    GENERAL

    •Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission and philosophy of Billings Clinic and department/service.

    Lead Responsibilities

    •Assists and supports Laboratory Management Team by providing leadership and direction while overseeing activities associated with the day-to-day operations of the Phlebotomy staff including establishing work schedules, work assignments and priorities.

    •Acts as a resource to staff responding to procedural questions and assisting with problem resolution.

    •Orients new staff and provides ongoing training/education needs for existing staff.

    •Participates in and provides input and feedback into the interviewing, hiring, performance appraisal and disciplinary processes.

    •May participate in ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements applicable to the department.

    Phlebotomy Responsibilities

    •Collects and prepares patient specimens to include blood, urine, sputum, and cultures. Coordinate specimen collection with physicians and/or nursing staff when draws must be taken from patients with central lines, groshong catheters and IV assisted draws.

    •Adhere to established guidelines and procedures for accurate patient and specimen identification, identifying non-compliance situations and take the necessary steps to bring situation into compliance.

    •Utilize computerized systems to enter laboratory orders, patient charges, generate reports, answer inquiries and resolve problems.

    •Coordinate with physicians, nursing staff and other health care providers for clarification of orders, laboratory tests available, test result turn around times, and for coordination of laboratory special procedures involving other health care providers.

    •Communicates with patients and family responding to questions and concerns regarding types of tests being performed. Refers questions regarding other aspects of care to the appropriate health care provider. Provides instructions to patients regarding specimen collection to be completed in the home environment. Coordinate with patients and physicians regarding collection errors and initiate appropriate follow-up measures to correct errors.

    •Provide back up to laboratory clerk position on evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays and as needed. Duties include running of reports, initiation of charge tickets for services rendered, and initial preparation of specimens for testing.

    •Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and a neat, orderly and clean work area.

    •Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.

    •Maintains competency in all organizational, departmental and outside agency environmental, employee or patient safety standards relevant to job performance.

    •Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education

    •16 years of age minimum

    Experience

    •On the job training available

    Certifications and Licenses

    •Healthcare provider CPR Within 6 months of hire

    •ASCP or AMT Phlebotomy Certification Preferred

    Other Minimum Qualifications

    •Courses in mathematics and science, preferred

    •Demonstration of progressively responsible duties, leadership experience preferred

    •Successful completion of Fit Testing for respirator wear; (considerations for proper mask fit include facial hair, glasses and eye/face protective devices, etc.)

     

    Or an equivalent combination of education and experience relating to the above tasks, knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered

     

    Employees that require a licensed or certification must be properly licensed/certified and the licensure/certification must be in good standing.
