Description
Under general supervision of the Risk Manager, the Risk Management Specialist provides a range of professional administrative, technical, and analytical support for city-wide risk management programs. Key responsibilities include contract and claims administration, loss prevention, insurance policy management, and offering high-level support to the Risk Manager.
Principal Duties
1. Investigate, process, and adjudicate general liability and property casualty claims, ensuring thorough and sufficient supporting evidence.
2. Maintain accurate and complete claims records, including entering incident reports, assigning claim numbers, and tracking the progress of each claim. Manage claim status notifications and coordinate the processing of related invoices to ensure timely and efficient claims handling.
3. Participate in settlement decisions, ensuring compliance with relevant laws, statutes, policies, and regulations, and achieving quality outcomes while controlling expenses.
4. Coordinate and pursue subrogation and restitution for damages or losses caused by third parties. Report losses to the carrier and assign independent adjusters/appraisers to assess property damage related to claims and covered losses.
5. Participate in contract reviews; review and evaluate insurance policies, assist with negotiations with respect to insurance premiums, terms, and conditions, renewals and modifications of insurance contracts, special events planning, and permitting activities to ensure risk is appropriately controlled or transferred.
6. Coordinate with Finance and Purchasing to report losses and file claims with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) following natural disasters.
7. Participate in policy and program development and enhancements to create Risk Management programing and initiatives that meet the City’s needs and objectives.
8. Assist the Risk Manager with special projects.
9. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, or a related field, and three (3) years of risk management experience with working knowledge of claims administration and insurance practices; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Texas Driver’s License
- State of Texas Property/Casualty or All-Lines Adjuster license
- Knowledge of Risk Management principles and the Texas Tort Claims Act
- Knowledge of insurance policies, claims process, administration practices and legal terminology
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion
- Excellent verbal & written communication and customer service skills, including the ability to compose and prepare routine correspondence and documents
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; multi-task and work effectively under time constraints; deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public
- Possess intermediate level computer skills in the use of word processing, spreadsheets, and data entry, as well as the ability to quickly learn software related to departmental functions
- Ability to prioritize projects and meet established or anticipated deadlines
Preferred:
- Three (3) to five (5) years’ Risk Management experience
- Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation
- Experience in conducting risk assessments
- Experience working in a matrix style leadership environment
