Job Title: Pipe Welder
Job Description
The Pipe Welder will be responsible for welding and repairing piping systems aboard the USS Cape St. George (CG-71) under the Navy's Big Blue III contract. This role involves ensuring high-quality welds that meet Navy standards and contribute to the vessel's operational readiness.
Responsibilities
+ Perform welding on various piping systems, including fuel, water, and waste management systems.
+ Prepare and clean base materials to remove oxides and contaminants before welding.
+ Set up and operate welding equipment, including SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW processes.
+ Conduct routine inspections and quality checks on welded joints.
+ Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and welding symbols.
+ Comply with all safety and environmental policies and procedures.
+ Maintain detailed records of work performed, including any necessary repairs or replacements.
+ Collaborate with other marine professionals to ensure the overall safety and functionality of the vessel.
+ Support the modernization and upgrade of Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical (HM&E) systems to improve ship availability, reliability, and mission readiness.
+ Assist in the deployment of new technologies aimed at reducing maintenance and workload requirements for piping systems and components.
+ Participate in the installation and maintenance of advanced piping systems specific to the USS Cape St. George.
+ Help with the integration of new hydraulic and pneumatic piping systems.
+ Perform tasks related to the environmental quality improvements aboard the ship.
+ Conduct routine inspections to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustments or repairs.
+ Ensure compliance with all Navy and shipyard regulations and standards.
Essential Skills
+ Two years of shipboard experience in the position and at the journeyman level of competence.
+ High school degree or technical vocational high school degree.
+ DBIDS eligibility.
+ Proven work experience as a Pipe Welder.
+ Deep understanding of welding techniques and equipment.
+ Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
+ Physical ability to lift and carry at least 45 pounds.
+ Willingness to work in various environmental conditions (e.g., high noise, dusty areas).
+ Must be able to pass a physical examination and obtain security clearance.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Previous experience in shipyard or similar environment preferred.
+ Certification from the American Welding Society (AWS) in pipe welding is a plus.
+ Specialized training in SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW welding techniques.
+ Experience with advanced diagnostic equipment and techniques.
+ Knowledge of Navy standards and regulations for shipboard welding.
+ Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
+ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
+ Excellent communication skills for coordinating with other marine professionals.

Work Environment
Work will be performed aboard the USS Cape St. George (CG-71) at Naval Base San Diego. The environment includes working with welding equipment such as SMAW, GTAW, and GMAW machines, and using a variety of hand and power tools. Safety equipment such as welding helmets, respirators, ear plugs, gloves, coveralls, hardhats, and steel-toed boots are provided. The role requires the ability to work in high noise and dusty areas, ensuring compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.

This is a Contract position based out of Chula Vista, California.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $42.00/hr.
