    Description

    The City of Norfolk’s Department of Libraries is currently seeking a full-time Library Associate I for its Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch who will perform customer service roles at the public service desks, as well as engage in Children’s and Teen programming with regular programs for the public, and will engage in outreach activities.

     

    The Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch at Broad Creek is a cornerstone of Norfolk's library system, serving as a vibrant hub for education, culture, and community gathering. Jordan-Newby offers resources tailored to meet the unique needs of its diverse community. With a focus on youth engagement, lifelong learning, and digital literacy, Jordan-Newby delivers impactful services, including robust technology offerings, extensive collections, and collaborative spaces. The branch is committed to fostering partnerships that strengthen community ties and enhance the quality of life in the Broad Creek neighborhood and all of Norfolk.

     

    The Norfolk Public Library (NPL) is a dynamic and community-focused network of libraries committed to fostering literacy, lifelong learning, and community engagement. With a rich history and a vision for the future, NPL provides diverse programs, resources, and services that empower individuals and enrich neighborhoods across Norfolk. Through innovative technology, robust collections, and outreach initiatives, NPL ensures equitable access to information and education for all residents.     Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $41,503

    Essential Functions

    Essential functions include but are not limited to:

    + Conducts Early Literacy programs such as Babygarten, KinderSTEM, Storytime, and 1-2-3 Play with Me.

    + Plans and promotes teen programming and monitors teen space.

    + Plans and promotes programs for youth and families such as art activities, crafting, cultural programs, etc.

    + Plans and promotes the Summer Reading Program.

    + Outreaches to schools, daycares, and other organizations promoting and representing NPL.

    + Maintains and monitors Kidzone and the program room.

    + Provides excellent customer service; assist patrons with library materials and book selections.

    + Assists in building and maintaining the library’s juvenile and YA collections.

    + Conducts tours of the library, including school tours and field trips.

    + Orders materials for the Children’s collection.

    + Inventories Storytime kits, Summer Reading Program materials, and other materials as assigned.

    + Leads, plans, and executes book displays or displays showcasing themes, seasons, etc.

    + Provides regular coverage of Public Service desks.

    + Answers reference questions involving resources in print and electronic formats.

    + Provides assistance in the use of computers, copiers, and scanners.

    + Provides Reader’s Advisory.

    + Prepares bibliographies and suggested reading lists; sets up book displays.

    + Creates and provides monthly office supply lists.

    + Performs administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reports.

    + Participates in committees and attends training related to the job.

    + Supervises part-time employees and volunteers.

    + Conducts meetings with Library aides.

    + Promotes the concept of the Family Place Library in Norfolk.

    + Proficient in Microsoft Office products such as WORD, EXCEL, and PowerPoint.

    + Performs administrative duties in collecting data and preparing Excel and written reports.

    + Ability to prioritize tasks.

    + Ability to lead and work in a team setting.

    + Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

    Education/Experience

    Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

     

    One year of experience in library or related services.

     

    Experience working with children in a library setting and supervisory experience are preferred.

     

    Additional Information & Requirements

     

    + Valid Driver's license may be required depending on assignment.

     

    Work Hours: 40 hours weekly – day, evenings, and weekends.

     

    Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.

     

    + Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

    + Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

    + Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

    + Retirement

     

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

     

    + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
