    *Position Summary* *Please note, Taunton is the Headquarters for District 5, however, this position is located on Martha's Vineyard and requires the incumbent to live on Martha's Vineyard year-round, 24/7, as the role does have a requirement that the incumbent respond to emergency calls within a certain period of time.* Incumbents of positions in this series assign and monitor the work of highway maintenance crews engaged in the upkeep, maintenance and repair of highways and roadways; check and report violations of departmental permits; maintain records of work completed, equipment used, etc., supervise snow removal operations; prepare reports and forms and perform other duties as required. The basic purpose of this work is to oversee workers and equipment in the effort to maintain and repair highway and roadway surfaces and roadside areas. *Duties & Responsibilities* * Monitor, coordinate, supervise, evaluate, and participate in the work of a crew engaged in maintaining highways and roadways in a safe condition by erecting, repairing and removing guardrails and snow fences; by installing and repairing curbing and by patching roadways; including breaking surfaces with hand or power tools and mixing and spreading a variety of paving materials. * Monitor, coordinate, supervise, evaluate and participate in the work of a crew involved in the upkeep of highways, roadways and adjacent areas by sweeping, collecting and removing rubbish, debris from accidents and animal carcasses from grounds, sidewalks and highways; by cutting grass and raking leaves; by performing snow removal and ice control work; by cleaning clogged drains, catch basins, manholes and pipes to assure adequate drainage and the safe and attractive conditions of assigned areas; and by installing new or adding to existing drainage systems. * Provide for the safety of work crew through placement of signs and other safety devices to provide warning to motorists. * Maintain records of work completed, equipment and materials used, employees’ time and attendance and highway conditions. * Perform related duties such as requisitioning supplies and equipment; loading and unloading materials and equipment; opening and securing buildings; performing preventive maintenance and making minor repairs to assigned machinery, equipment and motor vehicles. * Determine the type and amount of materials, personnel and equipment required to perform assigned tasks. * Make periodic inspections of district area highways, roadways, bridges, roadsides, structures, traffic and electrical equipment and all related appurtenances to determine the effectiveness of work performed, the need for maintenance and repair, to establish work priorities and to make recommendations to superiors concerning future programs of repairs and maintenance work. * Prepare reports to provide information to superiors on work progress and costs and problems encountered and to make recommendations concerning assigned activities. * Monitor and coordinate the activities of work crews to ensure the upkeep, maintenance and repair of highways in several assigned areas. * Review and evaluate reports and recommendations concerning assigned highway and roadside activities to resolve problems and to provide information to superiors. * Estimate the cost of labor and materials for repairs and/or alterations for assigned work and make appropriate recommendations to superiors. * Participate in the accident recovery program. * Supervise snow removal and ice control operations for a District section; assist in the determination of distribution of abrasives on icy roads and otherwise participate in Snow & Ice Management Activities. * Available 24/7 to respond as needed to emergencies, weather events and other activities requiring supervision or inspection services. *About MassDOT * The 4,000 employees of Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) take great pride in connecting the Commonwealth’s residents and communities.
