Cornell Cooperative Extension of Erie County has an opening for full-time SNAP-Ed Environmental and Marketing Nutritionist working from the Buffalo, NY office.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • Master’s Degree in Nutrition, Health Education, or Public Health. Bachelor’s Degree plus 4 years transferrable relevant evidence-based research experience may substitute.• Experience relevant to the role of the position including knowledge and experience with social marketing to affect behavior change and environmental change initiatives to affect behavior change.• Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position. • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.• Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in English.• Ability to plan, organize, implement, and present effective and relevant educational lessons to target audiences in a group setting.• Ability to communicate effectively, clearly, and tactfully through verbal, written and electronic methods. • Ability and willingness to work with a high degree of integrity, accuracy, organization, sound professional judgment, and the ability to handle confidential, sensitive information.• Ability to organize, manage, and prioritize multiple tasks, deadlines, requirements, and priorities to complete work in a timely manner and within established deadlines.• Experience, ability, and willingness to work with diverse audiences and maintain cultural humility.• Demonstrated ability to effectively assist with planning, developing, initiating, and teaching adult/youth educational programs.• Ability to work independently and effectively as a professional team member within the regional program.• Ability to plan and organize personal work responsibilities according to priorities developed with the immediate supervisor and regional staff.• Comfortable engaging partners and collaborators in working toward long range goals• Proficiency with windows-based software including use of the internet and Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.• Ability to work in a typical office environment which may include lifting, moving, and/or transporting office supplies, work related materials, and equipment with or without accommodation. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Understanding of Policy, Systems and Environmental strategies (PSE’s) and potential impact on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) audiences• Familiarity with the community in which the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.• Familiarity with purchasing and preparing foods, utilizing business expense accounts and pragmatic use of resources. • Knowledge and experience with logic models.• Experience in marketing/communications role.• Familiarity with a variety of program delivery methods to reach individuals and groups in youth and adult audiences and ability to integrate youth and adult development principles into educational activities.• Familiarity with reviewing and following guidelines and assure compliance to federal and state guidelines.• Understanding of how Policy, Systems and Environmental (PSE’s) are evaluated• Ability to clearly communicate (speak, read, and write proficiently) in Spanish.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Program Development - 20%• Assist with development of SNAP educational programs materials to address clients’ needs.• Assist with development and updating of new policy, systematic, and environmental (PSE) change strategies that align with OTDA priorities and guidance.• Stay informed of industry trends and best practices to understand how they can be applied to social media program development.• Contribute to the development and planning of environmental change initiatives that consider the diversity of the community.• Assist with strategic development of programming and marketing materials for educational events and mass media efforts related to program.
Program Delivery - 50%• Utilize existing program materials and educational framework to implement the recruitment and teaching of the targeted number of both adult and youth participants in the SNAP Program. • Apply subject matter knowledge to adapt approved curricula and materials to deliver SNAP-Ed nutrition education programming utilizing a variety of proven educational methodologies.• Conduct creative environmental change programs, based on the use of regionally-selected, approved materials, to impact audiences through a variety of delivery methods.• Utilize nutrition and social marketing knowledge to contribute to integrated, online marketing & engagement campaigns that deliver nutrition programming using social marketing tactics.• Assist with ensuring program delivery is within scope of the statewide and Association Plan of Work.• Provide support, resources and information to organizations, partner agencies and others designed to improve access and remove barriers to securing healthy foods and physical activity opportunities.• Implement innovative environmental strategies to deliver adult and youth nutrition education to target audiences; play an integral role in the delivery of regional environmental strategies.• May be involved in multidisciplinary and/or multi-association team efforts to deliver program.• Serve as a subject-matter resource in the area of Nutrition to staff and participants, community organizations and the general public.• Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell, or other land grant universities in a professional manner as part of program delivery. • Deliver high quality educational programming, partner, and community outreach to individuals and groups utilizing via workshops, presentations, demonstrations, and lessons existing SNAP-Ed program materials and resources.• Provide virtual and in-person programming which follows current statewide guidance for the safety of the Association and the community.• Create recorded video demonstrations and curricula-based programs to support statewide education efforts.• Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, occasionally apply established subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans as identified. • Under the direction and oversight of the Supervisor, adapt already established curriculum and materials as needed to meet established program objectives.• Implement already-established SNAP-Ed educational programing and program activities in support of other nutrition programming efforts as identified/needed to support the established plan of work.• Provide SNAP-Ed educational programs via mass media.• Work to foster acceptance of the SNAP-Ed Program, methods and policies while addressing community and individual needs and considering diverse audiences. • Assist in multi-association team efforts through joint planning and program implementation of multi-disciplinary programs and program activities including, but not limited to: in-person workshops, digital education in the form of virtual lessons, and other electronic methods, as assigned, to deliver the SNAP-Ed Program. Program Evaluation - 5%• Assist in the creation of policy, systematic, and environmental (PSE) evaluation framework• Implement program evaluation as designed.• Interact with program participants, Association staff, program committees, county/community leaders, and other key stakeholders to collect evaluation data for improving programs.• Assist in analyzing collected program evaluation data for reporting and program improvement purposes using standard, established policy, procedure, and methods. • Make recommendations for improvement/changes to strengthen and improve programmatic offerings. • Communicate evaluation results and findings.
Administrative Direction - 10%• Assist with effective strategic external and internal communication and marketing efforts to reach target audiences and meet program objectives and increase programmatic awareness through public relation initiatives including networking/collaborating with government, economic, educational and community organizations.• Assist in identifying and developing relationships with appropriate agencies, organizations, industries and community leaders for policy and environmental change programming.• Assist in the planning and promotion of public events and programs including, but not limited to, assisting with mass media efforts related to upcoming events and programs.• Assist with regional efforts for the planning and implementation strategies of social media activities and environmental change initiatives. • Utilize a variety of proven educational and Policy, System & Environmental (PSE) change methodologies in planning for the sustainability of implemented strategies.• Assist with training nutrition educators on policy, systematic, and environmental (PSE) evaluation tools and protocol.• Provide input into the planning of policy and environmental initiatives.• Assist with establishing program goals and priorities.• Assist in identifying and making recommendations for policy and environmental changes to address identified gaps/needs in the community, county, and/or region. • Assist with planning the structure of delivering educational SNAP-Ed programming via various methods.• Assist with identifying existing coalitions or appropriate partners with whom to collaborate on policy and environmental change initiatives and programming to address community gaps/needs.• Assist supervisor with planning program budget and needs.• Provide supervisor with program related information to assist the budget development process.• Assist with identifying activities and resources necessary to implement initiatives and projects.
Administrative Management - 5%• Assist in identifying and recommending program needs (i.e., program supplies and materials).• Solve problems and resolve conflicts that arise utilizing appropriate policies and procedures and with guidance of supervisor as needed.• Assist in monitoring program to ensure that educational content conforms to policies and objectives of the association and is research based.
Administrative Coordination/Operation - 5%• Assist with coordination of reporting (quantitative and qualitative) for Policy, Systems & Environmental (PSE) strategies; prepare monthly and quarterly reports demonstrating program progress, accomplishments, and the impact on the community.• Assist in utilizing effective marketing strategies in the promotion of SNAP-Ed programming efforts to include, but not limited to: print media, news media, social media, multi-media efforts and the environmental change initiative in collaboration with other nutritionists.• Assist with and provide input for the development of written marketing materials to highlight program(s).• Organize and coordinate SNAP-Ed program activities (i.e., food demonstrations, direct lessons to adults and youth, etc.) to support delivery of established program goals.• Coordinate identified administrative aspects of the SNAP-Ed Program including, but not limited to: preparing correspondence, maintain files, maintaining participant records, etc. ensuring confidentiality of all information• Assist to coordinate, compile, and organize existing program resources and program materials.• Apply subject matter knowledge to assist with creation of lesson plans.• Effectively maintain existing professional relationships with other agencies, organizations and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.• Coordinate program implementation activities and planning efforts with program staff.• Work closely with regional participating counties to execute scheduled social media activities. • Assist Supervisor to implement and support policy, systematic, and environmental (PSE) program reporting for all PSE strategies that meets reporting requirements and demonstrates impact of PSE’s.• Maintain records, complete reports, accurately collect and prepare paperwork as required for the program evaluation process.• Maintain confidentiality of all information and data collected, accessed, and/or maintained.• Prepare and submit accurate expense reports, mileage reports, receipts/supporting documentation, and/or vouchers in a timely manner per established policy and procedures. • Provide data and information to assist with preparation of reports, impact statements, and success stories for funders, advisory committees, Board, and others as requested.• Transport self and/or program materials/resources necessary for performing position responsibilities.
Professional Improvement - 5%• In cooperation with the Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.• Participate in all required orientation, training, and/or in-service meetings and events as scheduled/required.
Health and Safety - Applies to all duties and functions• Support the association to maintain a safe working environment.• Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.• Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
Policy and Other Duties as Assigned - Applies to all duties and functions• Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Cooperative Extension programs and other duties as assigned. • Conduct all programming and activities in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations. • Aware of, and adheres to, established Cornell Cooperative Extension Association policies, procedures, processes, and Skills for Success. • Represent Cornell Cooperative Extension to the public, community leaders, colleagues, volunteers, members of Cornell University faculty and staff, government officials and the general public in a professional manner at all times. • Perform all assigned duties in a professional, timely, and accurate manner.• Maintain regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
