    The Department of Natural Resources is seeking to fill one (1) full-time Natural Resources Specialist Intermediate at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park in Nerstrand, Minnesota. The days and hours of work for this position are varied. Holiday, weekend, and night shifts will be required.

     

    This position exists to provide professional assistance to the management and operation of Nerstrand Big Woods State Park. This position will implement and administer programs, projects and activities by applying experience and knowledge to enact division policies and procedures. This position acts as a lead worker at Nerstrand Big Woods State Park.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    + Assist the Park Supervisor to direct and administer the park’s development, maintenance and rehabilitation programs so that the buildings, grounds, facilities, utilities, roads, trails and equipment are functional and available for safe use and natural/cultural resources are preserved and protected.

    + Provide lead worker direction to staff, contractors and volunteers for assigned programs, projects and activities so that employees perform assigned duties and an efficient and effective park operation is achieved.

    + Assist the Park Supervisor to direct and administer various aspects of fiscal management in the park so that funds are utilized effectively and revenue accountability is achieved.

    + Collaborate in the development of and implement enforcement and emergency service programs in the park so that park resources, facilities, visitors and staff are protected.

    + Assist the Park Supervisor to direct, implement and evaluate the park’s resource management program in consultation with the Resource Specialist so that the park’s natural communities and cultural resources are protected and restored or rehabilitated consistent with statewide and regional objectives.

    + Assist the Park Supervisor to direct and implement visitor services on an ongoing basis and interpretive programs as assigned so that services, merchandise, information and education are available to the public.

    + Collaborate on planning and policy developments so that the Department vision, Division of Parks and Trails mission, and the goals and objectives of the park are realized.

    + Collaborate in the development and implementation of a public relations program for park visitors, park neighbors, local communities and public agencies that encourage and consider input and effectively communicates department and division goals and objectives.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + **Associates degree** in Natural Resources Management, Parks/Recreation, Business, Communications, or closely related field, and **ONE YEAR** experience involving outdoor recreation and/or natural resources facilities, projects or program responsibilities (e.g. trail, park, water access, campground or Natural Resources based recreation), including creating work plans and/or preparing reports, administering and/or supporting work that includes outdoor recreation and/or natural resources management programs, facilities or projects; administrative experience with budget and process management.

    OR

    + **A Bachelor’s degree** **or advanced degree** in natural or cultural resource management, parks and recreation, natural science, communications, education, public relations, business management, political science, public administration, social science or closely related field will substitute for the above experience.

    AND

    + Conflict resolution skills sufficient to resolve issues with individuals and groups.

    + Communications skills sufficient to give clear instructions and provide appropriate responses to individuals and groups.

    + Knowledge of outdoor recreation facilities and programs.

    + Writing skills sufficient to develop and finalize work plans, reports and/or proposals using appropriate business language.

    + Ability to use and understand computer and communication equipment sufficient to carry out administrative tasks and complete work effectively.This includes word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.

    + Ability to navigate natural terrain, board vehicles and watercraft (including trucks and large equipment), and endure physical exertion.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Associates or Bachelor's degreein Natural Resources Management, Parks/Recreation or closely related degree.

    + Experience and skill managing natural areas such as exotic species control, prescribed burning, conducting resource inventories and preparing environmental impact assessments.

    + Experience prioritizing work and managing projects.

    + Experience in preparing natural resource management plans, using GIS skills to create plan maps, and analyzing data.

    + Experience coordinating resource projects.

    + Experience directing staff, coordinating volunteers, and working with other agencies.

    + Experience communicating with audiences, giving presentations, media interviews, writing articles and publications.

    + Experience monitoring and managing budgets.

    Additional Requirements

    This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver's License with a clear driving record.
