    Position Description

    This position is located in the Water Services System Services Division and is responsible for operating the backhoe and/or trackhoe used in digging, drilling, paving, dredging ditches, or transporting materials as assigned. This position will also be required to perform physical labor assist with all kinds of repairs. This recruitment will be used to fill multiple position.

     

    Incumbent will be required to work nights, weekends and holidays.

     

    The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts associated with vehicle/equipment maintenance. These include working in extreme temperatures, working around potentially dangerous equipment, moving parts, carts, or machines, working around grease and oil, and so forth. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

     

    Work of this classification requires physical exertion such as: frequently lifting objects up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting heavy objects from 26 to 50 pounds yet seldom from 51 to 100 pounds; occasional crawling, frequent standing, walking, sitting, listening, talking, use of hands, driving, bending, climbing, squatting, push/pull seated and standing, and reaching above shoulder level.

     

    The incumbent may be exposed to a variety of irritant chemicals, lubricants, and exhaust fumes. Accordingly, employees may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, coats, goggles, gloves, or shields and to take other precautions as necessary to minimize risks of personal injury.

     

    Employees at Metro Water Services work around the clock to ensure high quality drinking water, and the best in storm water management and wastewater treatment for the residents of Nashville-Davidson County and some surrounding areas. It takes electricians, chemists, engineers, mechanics, information technology workers, customer service representatives and more working together to service more than 176,000 water, 190,000 stormwater and 189,000 sewer accounts.

    Typical Duties

    + Operates the backhoe and/or trackhoe powered equipment under transport or construction conditions.

    + Checks vehicle or equipment for daily maintenance before its operation.

    + May spread materials, load trucks, prepare subgrades, excavate trenches, resurface streets, perform finish grading, and transport materials.

    + Participates in a variety of construction and maintenance projects.

    + May lead work of other employees.

    + Maintains and operates equipment and tools.

    + Ensures employees are equipped with proper tools and equipment.

    Minimum Qualifications

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Eighth (8th) grade education and three (3) years of construction-related experience including one (1) year operating a backhoe and/or trackhoe.

     

    Candidates must be able to successfully demonstrate competence operating required equipment in accordance with the targeting criteria.

    LICENSE REQUIRED

    Valid "Class A" Commercial Driver License

     

    Candidates with accreditations earned in a foreign institute are encouraged to apply.

     

    Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
