Preference will be given to candidates with experience in coordinating the work load of a facilities maintenance team. Experience in municipal work is highly preferred, but not mandatory. An ideal candidate can maintain accurate records, communicate clearly in both written and verbal formats, and balance both the maintenance and administrative responsibilities of this position.

Depending upon the number of qualified candidates, an oral panel interview is tentatively scheduled for December 19th. The top candidates will be referred to the Public Works Department for further consideration, with the second round of interviews tentatively occurring on December 21st.
DEFINITION: The Chief Facilities Maintenance Worker performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks required to improve, maintain and repair City buildings and facilities. The Chief Facilities Maintenance Worker is the senior level in this series, providing lead supervision and training to subordinate personnel.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives general direction from the Equipment and Facilities Superintendent. Exercises technical and functional direction and training over assigned staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: This is the advanced journey level, lead class in the Facilities Maintenance series that performs the most complex duties related to the City's buildings and facilities. Responsibilities include inspecting and attending to assigned areas in a timely manner, and performing a wide variety of tasks in the maintenance and repair of buildings or equipment, including maintaining, replacing, and repairing basic plumbing and electrical systems and fixtures. Positions at this level are distinguished from those in the lower classification of Facilities Maintenance Worker/Senior by the independence with which incumbents perform their duties of handling the most difficult and complex work and performing lead work. This class is distinguished from the Equipment and Facilities Superintendent in that the latter is the full supervisory/management level class responsible for organizing, assigning, supervising, and reviewing the work of assigned staff.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Illustrative Only): Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
+ Assists the Equipment and Facilities Superintendent to implement goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.
+ Assigns and performs the most complex and highly skilled operational duties such as budget administration, parts, materials and equipment procurement and preparing operational procedures.
+ Maintains detailed records.
+ Prepares reports.
+ Prepares time and material cost estimates for work requested.
+ Responds to inquiries and complaints,
+ Evaluates operational effectiveness.
+ Coordinates, assigns, and reviews the work of subordinate personnel.
+ Provides technical training and lead supervision to subordinate personnel.
+ Evaluates the maintenance and preventative maintenance needs of City facilities, buildings, treatment plants, pump stations, lift stations, and water wells.
+ Assigns and performs complex and highly skilled construction activities,
+ Operates and maintains a variety of hand and power tools.
+ Reads blueprints and schematics.
+ Installs and repairs other mechanical systems in City buildings.
+ Provides overall division supervision in the absence of the Superintendent.
+ Assigns and performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and skill. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Certificate of Completion of coursework in mechanical-electrical technology from an accredited college or university desired.
Experience: Equivalent to three (3) years experience (full-time equivalent) comparable to the Senior Facilities Maintenance Worker or two (2) years experience comparable to the Stationary Engineer. (5 years of related experience total)
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES: A valid California driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Travel from site to site; work while elevated on platforms or ladders; exposure to low and medium voltages, hydraulic, pneumatic and chemical systems; may be required to work various shifts on evenings, weekends and holidays.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must possess mobility to work in various City buildings and facilities; strength, stamina and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, operate varied hand and power tools; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speck to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio; finger dexterity to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment; bend, stoop, kneel, reach and climb to perform work and inspect work sites; some heavy lifting, standing, climbing; may work at heights;lift, move, and carry materials and equipment weighing up to fifty (50) pounds and heavier weights with use of proper equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS: Exposure to confined spaces; some exposure to dust and noise; work in inclement weather conditions.Employees work in buildings and facilities and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives and contractors in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
An applicant who qualifies for veterans’ preference and successfully places on an eligibility list for initial entrance into employment with the city shall be advanced one rank on the final eligibility list. Where there are five (5) or less qualified applicants, no veterans’ preference shall apply and all applicants shall be placed on the certification list forwarded to the departments for hiring consideration. The exercise of veterans’ preference shall be exhausted upon appointment to a regular position from an eligibility list.
