As a UW employee, you have a unique opportunity to change lives on our campuses, in our state and around the world. UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem-solving skills, and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier world.

UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits, and natural beauty.

The University of Washington is one of the world’s preeminent public universities in impact and funding. Since 1972, the UW has continued to receive more externally sponsored research funding than any other U.S. public university and is one of the few universities in the U.S. with total research funding nearing two billion. That funding drives crucial, ground-breaking research that transforms lives around the globe. In the Office of Research at UW, we take pride in creating an outstanding climate of support for UW researchers that helps them compete and succeed. However, the complexity of research administration and regulation grows each day. Our mission in ORIS (Office of Research Information Services) is to reduce that administrative burden by streamlining and automating information services so researchers can spend more time researching. The performance, reliability, availability, scalability, and security of UW Research Administration reporting solutions is important to continuing the UW mission.

    Purpose:

The Office of Research Information Services (ORIS) Data Engineer for Data Warehousing/Business Intelligence (DW/BI) is critical for the continuing functionality and evolution of the technologies that enable important and necessary UW Research Administration reporting and analytics from infrastructure through reporting/dashboarding. This position is an essential, singular contributor who works with others to aggregate data from various business systems to provide timely, accurate, and critical business intelligence, visualizations, reports, and analytics to decision-makers and contributors at all levels of the University. These efforts provide the UW research community with an indispensable understanding of University research administration dynamics (proposals, submissions, funding, expenditures, compliance, etc.) in order to demonstrate scope of activities and improve operational effectiveness. Operations consist of supporting data solutions, some of which target 24/7/365 availability to meet University needs. In addition to building on and maintaining over a decade of reporting and analytics (Research Administration Data Warehouse), this position is also a pivotal team member in developing cloud-native reporting analytics, machine learning, and AI enhancement.

The Data Engineer (DW/BI) is a seasoned data professional with experience in advanced SQL, data design, modeling, and aggregation methods (such as data warehouse, lakehouse, and data lake), and modern software engineering tools and practices who works on teams with other engineers (such as data, cloud, and application engineers) and other disciplines (business analysts, report analysts, project managers, product owners, etc.). This position will also work across multiple University products both within the Office of Research and with partners across the University. This position will continue to mature our technology in both data warehousing and business intelligence including the use of machine learning and AI enhanced analytics.

    Position Complexities:

At a technical level, the Data Engineer (DW/BI) is the primary contributor who supports business critical data pipelines, modeling, warehousing, and analytics that come from business systems within the Office of Research and across the University. The data sources that are aggregated include data about people, roles, activities, location, financial, employment, and more. These sources include sensitive data that must be kept secure from unauthorized access while maintaining high availability for authorized usage. The data is often operational in nature (sometimes from legacy systems) and requires thoughtful analysis and modeling to ensure accurate and timely reporting for compliance, operations, and University strategic decision making.

Further, because of the technical breadth of the position, the position must:

    • Lead, plan, and advise on the strategic and tactical direction of all facets of data warehousing and business intelligence across multiple critical University needs (compliance, research administration operations, and responding to emerging, emergent needs), from meeting security requirements to ensuring stability, performance, and availability requirements are met

    • Align essential data and database configuration, maintenance, and operations with overall ORIS IT operational goals and business objectives as outlined by ORIS program portfolio that supports UW’s $1.89 billion research enterprise.

    • Collaborate and consult with multiple teams of diverse staff including junior and senior engineering staff as well as technical leads, product owners, and project managers across multiple products.

    Position impact to the University:

This position advances the Office of Research’s mission to support the integration of electronic research information systems as a data engineer, ensuring the optimized and performance applications with the data pipelines, warehousing, and business intelligence. Without this position, the University would not be able to respond quickly to emergent and emerging reporting needs, would not be able to improve operational efficiencies, and would not be able to maintain critical reporting and analytics tools and repositories. The success of the Data Engineer (DW/BI) will reduce the administrative burden on researchers across the University by improving the amount of time researchers can spend on researching; improve University compliance; provide stakeholders with critical analytics and reporting, and ensure that the University can continue to be at the forefront of academic research.
