What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking a Computer Engineer who can fulfill the role of a platform and environment developer. For Platform development, the Computer Engineer will design, develop and maintain the underlying platform infrastructure on a variety of embedded RF hardware solutions which run Digital Signal Processing code on edge Linux systems. Ability to load, configure, and utilize operating systems, develop platform automation tools, design and configure networks, run static code analyzers, implement cyber security best practices, scripting and software development are all skills needed for the position. This role should have both breadth of knowledge and experience with multiple domains such as digital hardware (CPU, GPU, FPGA), Firmware, and Software. In this position, the Computer Engineer will interact with teammates, internal project leadership, and possibly external stakeholders to determine requirements and then work both with the team and individually to translate the requirements into integrated and secure automated solutions. They may be responsible for prototyping and documenting possible solutions within the project framework.
For Environment development, the Computer Engineer will configure and manage RF laboratory equipment to include test beds comprised of full systems (User Interface server, embedded RF processing digital electronics, and RF Front End systems). This includes ensuring standup and maintain of development computers, servers running system code, and networking with the RF laboratory. Lastly continued improvement to the existing development environment (Gitlab and Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment technologies) are needed.

The successful candidate will have the ability to provide automated platform solutions by synergizing researching technology fundamentals, testing and evaluating those hypotheses in a controlled test environment and then planning and implementing those solutions to satisfy requirements. Artifacts provided by this methodology include:
• State-of-the-art designs that are efficient, secure and meet present and future capacity.
• Understand architecture specifications and detailed design documentation to provide automated solutions.
• Planning and coordination of the installation and configuration of the solution.
The successful candidate must maintain and grow technical expertise in all areas of computing platforms including servers, storage, network devices, and security devices (SIEMs, ACSs, and firewalls), Operating Systems (Linux), and virtualization to facilitate:
• Continuous platform operations and troubleshooting time-sensitive issues.
• Evaluating and reporting on new platform technologies and recommending viable and scalable solutions for incremental enhancements.
Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Relocation will be provided for those that qualify.
Occasional travel may be required.
Salary Range:
$99,400 - $193,600
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
• Active US DOE Security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D Computer Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
• Graduate degree in Computer Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
• Demonstrated ability to execute and deliver technical work products with application of appropriate rigor and pedigree documentation (design/code reviews, technical oversight/approvals, project team concurrence, artifact generation, etc.).
• Experience in computer systems design and software development for real-time and embedded processing systems, distributed processing systems, or real-time client server implementations.
• Familiarity with hardware/software requirements generation for verification, validation and qualification.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary, multi-disciplinary team setting for a common purpose.
• Active DOE Q or DOD TS security clearance.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
• 2 years of experience in three or more desired qualifications
• Experience working with Linux operating systems.
• Experience in Linux Systems administration.
• Experience programming in Python, bash (or similar languages).
• Experience in computer and network systems anomaly resolution, troubleshooting, or debugging.
• Experience with Ansible or similar technologies (Puppet, Chef, Salt, etc)
• Experience in computer and network systems analysis to determine system requirements, define system design, develop architectures, and assess functionality and performance.
• Experience in establishing and maintaining network infrastructures by performing network systems analysis, build and configuration, anomaly resolution, troubleshooting, or debugging.
• Experience with information assurance, including security information and event management, access control systems, firewalls and intrusion prevention technologies.
• Experience with systems engineering or systems architecture principles, artifacts, tools, and processes.
• Ability to travel infrequently (once to twice per year, on average).
About Our Team:
The RF & Systems Electronics Center (Center 05300) provides key electronics systems work to a wide variety of nuclear weapons, space, intelligence, and military programs across Sandia and the Nation. The Advanced RF Systems group (05330) supports the Nation¿s technology superiority strategies by delivering capabilities for RF & spectral dominance, global highly reliable communications, and novel advancements for future strength. We are a highly dynamic set of departments that cross-team to provide integrated engineering systems solutions ranging from core research through prototype development and high-end, fielded products.
The Advanced Systems department (05334) develops multi-domain novel electromagnetic attack concepts and systems with an eye on low size, weight, and power constrained applications. Our customers include a variety of government organizations including the U.S Armed Forces, the Intelligence Community, and special operations Community. Our staff members have a diverse skills base including microwave circuit design, antenna design, signal analysis, digital signal processing, embedded software, and system designs comprised of the latest associated hardware. We partner across the laboratory and the group to bring on other critical skill sets to our multi-disciplinary team to include computer scientists, systems engineers, and cyber engineers. Our design challenges include system development (designing scalable systems, systems integration into host platforms, etc), understanding complex adversary systems and associated vulnerabilities, and signal analysis and generation of RF low probably of detect waveforms.

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
