    Job Description:

    45% - Litigation/Case Management

    Assist with case management of client files, including conducting intake and selection of clients. Provide legal representation of clients with a variety of legal needs, including representation before administrative bodies and courts as applicable. Representation of clients includes interviewing clients and appropriate witnesses, making legal decisions on the method of litigation or objectives of the client’s case, and providing legal advice to clients.

     

    25% - Student Supervision

     

    Assist with the supervision of clinic interns, including holding supervisory meetings, reviewing and giving feedback on student work and assisting students in the representation of clients.

     

    20% - Teaching and Classroom Support

     

    Assist the clinic director with teaching the classroom component of the clinic.

     

    10% - Other Duties

     

    Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

    Required Qualifications:

    1. J.D. from an ABA accredited law school.

    2. Three years of law practice or other legal experience. Other experience may include legal internships, clinic participation, judicial clerkships, or any such combination of comparable legal experiences.

    3. Admitted to the Kansas Bar or eligible to waive into the Kansas Bar.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Previous knowledge, familiarity, and experience with the legal issues facing veterans, as evidenced by application materials.

    2. Previous experience or familiarity with military service or government benefits, as evidenced by application materials.

    3. Previous experience with pro bono activities and demonstrated commitment to the legal profession as seen by application materials.

    4. Previous experience communicating effectively and civilly with a wide range of groups of individuals, as evidenced by application materials and interview process.

    5. Previous experience using Microsoft Office suite and commercial client management software as evidenced in application materials.

    Position Overview:

    The University of Kansas School of Law seeks to hire a staff attorney to support the Veterans Legal Support Clinic (VLS Clinic). Primary duties will involve supervising clinic students, assisting with case management, litigating claims for veteran clients, interfacing with various clinic stakeholders, and providing any assistance required by the Director of the clinic.

     

    The Veterans Legal Support Clinic is part of the Law School’s robust clinical program and helps meet the needs of the area veteran population by providing legal services and community education. The staff attorney position provides an opportunity for an attorney to meaningfully assist clients with a variety of legal issues that directly impact veterans. This position will work directly with clients to ensure the best possible outcomes.

     

    This position is a twelve-month unclassified professional staff position that is grant funded for an initial three years. Continuation of the position beyond three years remains contingent upon securing additional funding.
