    Job Description:

    The Applied Machine Learning Scientist II is responsible for providing technical knowledge and expertise on advanced analytics and machine learning across a broad range of analytics functions including data and modelling frameworks, tools, technology, processes and procedures.

     

    This role generally provides expertise in stakeholder interactions related to complex advanced analytics related material. Additionally, this role plays a lead role in the development of AI/ML systems to solve a range of complex problems and is adept at translating business objectives into technical solutions.

    Department Overview:

    The Advanced Analytics (AA) team at TD Bank serves as a center of excellence (CoE), providing essential support to US lines of business with their advanced analytics requirements. This dedicated team specializes in creating and implementing sophisticated statistical and Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence solutions to address a wide range of strategic business challenges across consumer, commercial, and shared services sectors within TD Bank.

     

    The AA team collaborates closely with key stakeholders to identify opportunities for leveraging data-driven insights and predictive models to drive informed decision-making and optimize business outcomes. By harnessing cutting-edge analytical tools and techniques, the team helps TD Bank stay ahead of the curve in a rapidly evolving financial landscape. Additionally, they play a vital role in fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement by staying abreast of emerging trends and technologies in the field of advanced analytics. Through their expertise and dedication, the AA team contributes significantly to TD Bank's competitive edge and overall success in the marketplace.

    Position Overview:

    The role is focused on developing and applying a broad set of evolving advanced statistical and AI/ML techniques to solve business problems. It includes gathering, analyzing, and modeling a wide range of data, applying mathematical models/techniques and tools, and utilizing software engineering best practices to develop and implement solutions.

     

    The successful candidates will play a lead role in the end-to-end project delivery for large scale and cross-functional advanced analytics projects leveraging leading-edge techniques and innovative solutions to solve a wide array of business problems. They will provide deep technical expertise in stakeholder interactions related to complex advanced analytics and AI/ML areas.

    Detailed accountabilities include:

    + Develop robust and reliable machine learning algorithms helping to solve strategic business challenges.

    + Use advanced techniques, such as advanced statistics, advanced mathematics, machine learning and AI, NLP, LLMs and Generative AI, geospatial analytics, storytelling & visualization, on structured and unstructured data to enable insightful actions.

    + Leverage a broad stack of technologies and platforms and packages— Python, Azure, Databricks, PySpark, PyTorch, and more — to reveal the insights hidden within huge volumes of numeric and textual data.

    + Work closely with various stakeholders and successfully lead the project through all phases of the model lifecycle, from ideation and design through data gathering, training, evaluation, control and governance partners review and approval process, implementation, and ongoing monitoring and maintenance.

    + Provides expertise in stakeholder interactions related to complex advanced analytics related material. Effectively communicate model design and results to senior leaders and business partners, articulate the business problems from a technical/quantitative definition and facilitate key strategic discussions and provide thought leadership.

    + Provide strong knowledge in various AI/ML areas. Deliver insight into leading analytic practices, designs and leads iterative learning and development cycles, and ultimately produce new and creative analytic solutions that will become core deliverables.

    + Maintain full professional knowledge of techniques and developments in the field of Machine Learning and AI, including Generative AI, and share knowledge with more junior staff, business partners, and senior management.

    + Collaboration with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to translate business needs into innovative AI and data-driven solutions.

    + Maintain relationship with the team's strategic partners, such as business teams, AI2, and governance and control partners.

    + Provide thought leadership and mentorship to more junior staff.

    Depth & Scope:

    + Adept at technical project execution, strategic planning and effective communication. Accountable for specialized knowledge in a field of AI/ML

    + Works autonomously and accountable for acting as a lead within a function

    + Undertakes and completes a variety of complex initiatives requiring seasoned specialist AI/ML knowledge and/or the integration of cross functional processes

    + Typically deals with senior/executive management

    Education & Experience:

    + Undergraduate degree required, advanced technical degree preferred (e.g., math, physics, engineering, finance or computer science) Graduate's degree preferred with either progressive project work experience, or;

    + 1+ years relevant experience (includes post graduate experience)

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Experience in predictive modelling using various ML/AI techniques

    + Formal training or substantive experience in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or relevant fields.

    + In-depth knowledge of ML/AI algorithms and techniques, such as Gradient Boosting Method, NLP, modern deep Neural Networks, and time series forecasting.

    + Familiarity and experience with Generative AI techniques and advancements.

    + Full stack experience in data science product delivery, including data collection, aggregation, analysis, and visualization, development and testing, implementation, and monitoring.

    + Proficiency in Python, PySpark, PyTorch, and SQL programming languages as well as object-oriented programming.

    + Familiarity with version control software or platform such as Git, Bitbucket or Github.

    + Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required to interpret data and draw conclusions.

    + Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

    + Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

    + Good time management and project management skills with strong ability to successfully balance competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

    + Ability to provide conflict resolution and collaborate effectively with teammates.

    + Experience with distributed computing and parallel processing on large data sets using Spark.

    + Ability to research and implement Machine Learning algorithms from academic research papers.

    + Experience with leading and managing a small team.

    + Provides strong knowledge in a given AI/ML area. Delivers insights into leading analytic practices, designs and leads iterative learning and development cycles, and ultimately produces new and creative analytic solutions that will become core deliverables

    + Works closely with business owners to identify opportunities and serves as an ambassador for data science

    + Designs and delivers enterprise analytic solutions for customers

    + Develops powerful business insights from a broad range of data using advanced machine learning techniques

    + Works in a highly interactive, team-oriented environment with Big Data developers, engineers, modelers and others

    + Adheres to enterprise frameworks or methodologies that relates to activities for our business area

    + Ensures respective programs/policies/practices are well managed, meets business needs, complies with internal and external requirements, and aligns with business priorities

    + Ensures business operations are in compliance with applicable internal and external requirements (e.g. financial controls, segregation of duties, transaction approvals and physical control of assets)
