Position Overview

Zelis is seeking an Infrastructure Operations Engineer to be the hands-on powerhouse behind our mission-critical data center infrastructure. If you're a traditional Systems Administrator ready to evolve into a Systems Engineer, thrive in on-prem environments, and take pride in solving real-world infrastructure challenges—not clicking around in the cloud console—this role is for you.

You’ll work with cutting-edge Dell hardware, VMware virtualization, and Linux/Windows platforms, all while supporting our production environment with minimal downtime, proactive monitoring, and tight vendor partnerships.

Location Requirement: Candidates must reside within 45 minutes of Culpeper, VA and be available to visit the data center a minimum of 2x per month.

What You’ll Do

+ Own the VMware stack – Configure, manage, and troubleshoot complex vSphere environments (vDS, vSS, etc.) with a focus on performance, uptime, and smart scaling.

+ Command Dell compute and storage – Deploy, optimize, and maintain Dell PowerEdge servers and PowerStore storage, including zoning and fibre channel SANs.

+ Keep our data center humming – Oversee rack infrastructure, power, cooling, and network hardware, ensuring uptime and physical reliability.

+ Troubleshoot across Linux and Windows – Hands-on with RHEL and Windows Server OS—resolving incidents, patching, automating, and optimizing.

+ Automate everything – Script with PowerShell and PowerCLI to streamline repeatable tasks, improve response times, and reduce manual overhead.

+ Collaborate cross-functionally – Partner with IT, DevOps, Security, and Engineering to support critical infrastructure initiatives.

+ Document like a pro – Keep configuration records and SOPs up to date so the environment stays manageable and repeatable.

+ Continuously improve – Bring fresh eyes and new ideas to everything from capacity management to failover planning.

What You’ll Bring to Zelis

+ 3–5 years in Infrastructure Operations, Systems Admin, or Systems Engineering roles.

+ Proficiency with VMware vSphere, Dell compute/storage, and Linux (RHEL) environments.

+ Strong understanding of networking fundamentals (VLANs, DNS, TCP/UDP, iSCSI, fibre channel, VMware vDS/vSS).

+ Experience working with data center equipment, including physical setup and vendor coordination.

+ Solid scripting ability using PowerShell and PowerCLI.

+ Excellent problem-solving instincts, ability to operate independently, and readiness to grow technically.

Nice to Have

+ Certifications: VMware VCTA/VCP, RHCSA, Dell server/storage certifications, or Microsoft Hybrid Admin.

+ Familiarity with VMware Aria Operations, storage capacity planning, and telemetry-based monitoring tools.

+ Understanding of Dell PowerStore automation modules and APIs.

What This Role Is Not

+ Not a cloud-only position – This is for engineers who love data center and on-prem environments.

+ Not entry-level – This requires hands-on depth and cross-platform knowledge, not just clicking through UIs.

+ Not purely Windows-focused – Linux experience is essential to succeed here.

We have offices in Atlanta GA, Boston MA, Morristown NJ, Plano TX, St. Louis MO, St. Petersburg FL, and Hyderabad, India.
