In 1984, the University of Rochester was among the first medical schools to create a formal Division of Medical Humanities & Bioethics as a natural outgrowth of the school's signature biopsychosocial model to solidify the presence of the humanities in the medical school curriculum. In December 2021, the Division became a formal department of Health Humanities and Bioethics (HHBE) with the aim to become nationally recognized for active engagement and contributions to the advancement of ethical, just, and humanistic health care, and for education and training in health humanities and bioethics. The department is expanding the number of full-time faculty to achieve this vision.

The faculty engage in scholarship, clinical and community service, and the teaching of graduate students, medical students and other trainees in the health professions. The candidate will have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in bioethics or one of the humanities or social science disciplines.

At least 50% of effort will be devoted to scholarship.

Application review will begin in late September 2024.

We especially welcome faculty who bring an equity lens to their scholarship and teaching and who demonstrate a strong record of collaboration in scholarship and research.

Experience teaching in an academic health center preferred. The successful candidate will be expected to teach selectives in the medical school and to teach and mentor medical students who choose the Health Humanities - Bioethics Pathway. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach two courses in the master's program. They will be expected to mentor several masters students in their capstone projects.
