    Job Summary

    The Behavioral Health Director of the Family Medicine Residency is responsible for the strategic planning, development, implementation, and oversight of behavioral health education and integration within the Family Medicine residency training program. This role combines clinical education, supervision, consultation, research leadership, and wellness support for residents, ensuring excellence in behavioral science instruction, resident development, and interprofessional collaboration.

    Key Responsibilities

    Education & Curriculum Development

     

    + Design, implement, manage, and revise the Behavioral Medicine curriculum.

    + Teach behavioral science topics longitudinally and during dedicated rotations, including communication skills and behavioral health simulations.

    + Coordinate orientation and competency assessment programs.

    + Oversee behavioral medicine training for podiatry residents and other rotating learners.

    + Schedule, deliver, and evaluate didactics, retreats, and workshops (e.g., leadership, wellness, self-awareness).

    + Conduct direct observation and supervision of residents in both outpatient and inpatient settings.

     

    Resident Wellbeing & Development

     

    + Provide regular supervision and evaluation of residents in behavioral health domains.

    + Support the personal and professional development of residents, including responding to developmental needs and wellness issues.

    + Co-chair the FM Wellness Committee.

    + Behavioral Health Integration & Clinical Consultation

    + Provide guidance for Behavioral Health Consultants in residency clinics.

    + Provide consultation to medical teams regarding patients with behavioral health needs in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

    + Attend Care Team Meetings to offer behavioral health input and support interprofessional care.

     

    Research & Scholarly Activity

     

    + Maintain and encourage an environment of clinical and scholarly inquiry

    + Collaborate with GME research staff

    + Plan and coordinate Family Medicine Research Day and participate in hospital-wide Scholarly Inquiry Committee.

     

    Faculty Development

     

    + Conduct direct observations of faculty with constructive feedback.

    + Provide faculty development on feedback strategies and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

    + Contribute to strategic planning for program improvement through data collection and analysis.

     

    Recruitment & Program Representation

     

    + Serve on the FM Recruitment Committee.

    + Lead group interviews and assist with candidate evaluations and ranking.

     

    Administrative & Committee Involvement

     

    + Maintain behavioral medicine training calendars and records.

    + Participate in Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) and relevant professional and population health subcommittees.

    + Attend leadership meetings to align training with clinical needs and institutional priorities.

    Licensure/Certification:

    + Licensed Psychologist

    + Full licensure by the Michigan Board of Psychology

    Education:

    + PhD or PsyD in Psychology (academic doctorate required)

    + Clinical Health Psychology Fellowship training preferred, but not required

    + Expertise in behavioral medicine education and curriculum design.

    + Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and consultation skills.

    + Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

    + Commitment to scholarly inquiry and continuous improvement.

    + Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.

    + Strong organizational and time-management skills.

    + Demonstrated ethical professionalism and cultural competence.
