POSITION OVERVIEW: A Certified weld inspector (CWI) assists the Engineering, Production, and Quality department to plan and evaluate weldment quality per customer and industry code requirements. The CWI directs and leads weld quality improvement and solves issues arising in production regarding welding procedures and requirements. CWI also maintains the certified weld program by testing and certifying welding employees per customer and industry requirements. PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

     

    • Responsible for maintaining the certified welding program, including weld testing and evaluation

    • Responsible for ensuring the company is in compliance with all certifications and testing required by customers (WPS, PQR, WPQR) and maintain all records

    • Interpret and implement technical documention (Code books, specifications, Lab reports, rejection/Quality reports)

    • Works closely with Engineering, Production, and Quality to ensure proper weld requirements and procedures are followed

    • Fills out and approves welding set-up sheets

    • Investigates and proposes new welding equipment or processes that would be beneficial to the company to increase weld quality or efficiency

    • Helps resolve weld-related failures from customer rejections and reduce internal leak rejections to minimize reworking parts

    • Develop tooling or techniques to implement more efficient processes during production and reduce non-welding labor

    • Using measurement tools such as calipers, micrometer and weld gages to verify weld dimensions, signing off on job start-up.

    • Contact and collaborate with customers and vendors on issues regarding welding and weld quality via phone, email, or in-person conferences

    • Complete tracking sheets for weld defects found. Communicate the issues to the area creating it.

    • Train/evaluate production welders, maintain welder qualification records.

    • All other projects and tasks as assigned.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

    • AWS Certified weld inspector certification (D1.1 preferred codebook)

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Thorough knowledge of the GTAW (TIG) and GMAW (MIG) welding processes

    • Knowledge of welding symbology

    • Knowledge of the use of weld measurement equipment (calipers, feeler gages, fillet gage, bridge-cam gage)

    • Knowledge and understanding of AWS and ASME code documentation
