Description
As an Optical Engineer, you'll be at the forefront of developing innovative consumer products. Working within a dynamic, cross-disciplinary team, you'll contribute to every stage of product development - from conception and design to execution and testing. Your expertise will be crucial in driving innovation and solving complex optical challenges.
Key job responsibilities
- Collaborate with a diverse team of experts to develop high-level system architectures and define subsystem and component-level requirements
- Design, model, fabricate, and test advanced optical components, diffractive elements, and projection systems
- Lead rapid prototyping and characterization of optical systems in conjunction with component and product engineering teams
- Validate optical architectures using both modeling and laboratory data, driving performance improvements where possible
- Engage with external vendors, suppliers, and contract manufacturers to optimize design and expand manufacturing capabilities
- Stay current with emerging optical technologies and industry trends, incorporating new advancements into our product pipeline
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in consumer electronics, focusing on display light engines and diffractive optical elements
- Proven track record in optical simulation, metrology, and testing at component, assembly, and system levels
- Proficiency in at least one optical modeling software package (e.g., LightTools, Zemax, CODE V, FRED, TracePro, SPEOS, Lumerical)
- Hands-on experience with optics component characterization and product integration
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Experience with MATLAB programming
- Proficiency in CAD software such as Creo or SolidWorks
- Expertise in complex optical systems involving illumination, imaging, stray light mitigation, radiometry/photometry, and holographic/diffractive optics
- Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication and lithography processes
- Experience working in international, cross-functional teams
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Track record in mass production of optical devices

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $105,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $185,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
