Union Affiliation: Machinists Union Local 88
Hourly Wage: $34.08 per hour,plus $2.66 per hour contribution to the union pension fund, for a total compensation of $36.74 per hour. Effective 7/1/2025, the total compensation will increase to $40.29 per hour, which includes the pension contribution.

Essential Functions
+ Perform major and minor repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment, including tandem axle trucks, graders, backhoes, forklifts, front end loaders, automobiles, generators, motorcycles, and light trucks.
+ Overhaul engines, transmissions and hydraulic systems, A/C and heating systems, suspension, and drive train components.
+ Perform maintenance, repairs and/or replace braking systems (including air brakes), tires, electrical systems, etc.; repair body damage; utilize welding for maintenance and repairs.
+ Fabricate and modify equipment components.
+ Conduct vehicle inspections to ensure safety and functioning compliance; test drive and operate vehicles and equipment.
+ Maintain inventory of parts and equipment; order parts and supplies; maintain work orders for parts and labor.
+ Other duties as assigned, based on training and qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
+ Knowledge of vehicle equipment operations, maintenance and repair principles, practices, and techniques, including troubleshooting, monitoring systems, safety management, etc.
+ Knowledge of electronic, hydraulic, mechanical, and braking systems.
+ Knowledge of and ability to promote department safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines, including risk management techniques to reduce exposure to injury, damage, and liability.
+ Skill in utilizing various computer software and databases, including Microsoft 365 and diagnostic systems, and the ability to learn job-specific applications and equipment.
+ Skill in performing maintenance and repairs on a wide variety of vehicles and construction equipment, including heavy duty trucks, trailers, graders, loaders, back hoes, automobiles, and light trucks.
+ Skill in safely operating various tools, equipment, vehicles, and other machinery.
+ Skill in welding, and fabricating equipment components.
+ Skill in managing multiple projects with shifting priorities and timeline demands.
+ Skill in organization, time management and prioritizing with the proven ability to have keen attention to detail and accuracy in performing work with adherence to strict deadlines.
+ Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
+ Ability to understand and interpret maintenance and repair manuals.
+ Ability to maintain current knowledge, developments, and trends related to specific area of focus and/or assigned projects.
+ Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling the confidential and sensitive information.
+ Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.
+ Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.
+ Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures, including federal, state and local vehicle regulations.
Working Conditions:
+ Position requires the ability to lift 50 lbs. or less.
+ Duties may include painting and body repair work requiring respiratory certification.
+ Work environment may include exposure to occupational hazards, chemicals, biohazards, construction hazards, and physical risks, including adverse weather and working in confined spaces or high traffic areas, which require following basic safety precautions.
+ Position requires a rotation of standby/on-call shifts to respond to emergencies outside regular hours.
+ Position is subject to random drug and alcohol testing as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Qualifications and Additional Application Materials
+ Any combination of training and experience equivalent to six (6) years’ experience with light pickup, automotive and heavy equipment mechanic functions.
+ Must have a valid Montana commercial driver’s license** with a verified acceptable driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
+ Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or similar mechanical certification and Department of Transportation (DOT) air brake certification, preferred.
**As of January 6, 2020, employers of CDL drivers must query the Clearinghouse to verify that a current or prospective driver is not prohibited from operating CMVs or performing other safety sensitive functions.
