Custom Job Purpose:
This position exists to perform responsible work in assisting in the developing and directing the overall school nutrition program for the School District.
Essential Functions of this Job
Serves as assistant to the School Nutrition Director. Assists in planning and directing the overall school nutrition program. Sets specifications, plans menus, determines quantities, awards bids, and requisitions food. Establishes food tests for quality, acceptability and adherence to specifications. Coordinates bids, orders and distribution of foodservice uniforms. Plans and develops teaching materials for personnel training. Coordinates the School Nutrition Leadership Academy. Assists school principals and school nutrition managers in planning new facilities and the renovation of facilities. Attends meetings and conferences; conducts meetings and workshops for school nutrition personnel.
Assists in the staffing needs for District Schools. Prepares, reviews and updates accounting, inventory and other school nutrition reports. Prepares correspondence relating to the school nutrition program. Coordinates verification plan for free and reduced meal applications. Assists in the Orientation Workshop for school nutrition substitutes. Helps with interviewing and screening of new school nutrition employees. Coordinates manager intern and manager/trainer programs. Supervises the work of interns and manager/trainers and evaluates their performance.
Serves as liaison between point of service and meal eligibility processing software vendors and information services department. Assumes the responsibility of the School Nutrition Director in her/his absence.
Non-Essential Functions of this Job

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the local, state and federal laws and regulations applicable to school nutrition programs. Considerable knowledge of the practices and procedures used in the administration and operation of school nutrition. Knowledge of sanitary and safety conditions. Considerable knowledge of purchasing, warehousing, inventorying, and accounting for food products. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with personnel and subordinates. Ability to use initiative and judgment in systematizing procedure, adjusting problems and grievances, and making recommendations relative to the revisions of school nutrition procedures. Supervisory ability. Basic knowledge of personal computers, terminals and related software. Bilingual/biliterate preferred.
Education, Experience and/or Certification/License Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in Nutrition, Hotel and/or Restaurant Management or related field; considerable responsible foodservice experience, including experience in a supervisory capacity; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Basic knowledge of personal computers, terminals and related software. Professional certificate covering the field of school foodservice.
Work Context:
Requires some sitting and standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. Requires the use of alternative communication systems, such as electronic mail, telephones and computers. Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires face-to-face discussions and contact with individuals and/or teams. Requires work with internal and external contacts, and with the public.
Physical Environment:
Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Requires sitting for the majority of the day, and the ability to lift, carry, move and/or position objects infrequently weighing up to 20 pounds.
