    The head men’s lacrosse coach is responsible for all facets of the lacrosse program. Because of the unique nature and 200 plus-year history of this program, this is a highly visible and important leadership position for the Colleges.

     

    The head coach has responsibilities for the teaching and development of the student-athletes; the advising of team members; and the supervision and mentoring of the assistant coaches. The head coach is responsible for the development and implementation of an effective recruitment and retention plan. It is imperative that the program be in compliance with NCAA, HWS, and Atlantic 10 Conference regulations at all times and the head coach will make certain that the program is run in a fiscally responsible manner. Consistent with all Hobart head coaches, the head lacrosse coach will be a member and perhaps a leader of one of the department’s Administrative Teams. The vision is to provide a meaningful athletic experience while succeeding within the ultra-competitive Atlantic 10 Conference.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Development of technical knowledge:

    + In conjunction with the staff, the head coach must develop sport specific strategies and techniques in all aspects of the game to be used by the team to attain the best possible performance in competition.

    + Professional development through clinics, seminars, camps and interchange with other coaching staffs is crucial in this area.

    Team Teaching and Game Preparation:

    + Organize, plan and implement all aspects of effective practice time. Priority should be given to create an atmosphere conducive to learning and achieving. Efficient use of time, enthusiasm and motivation, and constant feedback are critical.

    + Opponent evaluation, development of specific game strategies and making effective staff, player and tactical decisions to enhance team performance.

    + Evaluate team personnel in a manner that is thorough, consistent and fair to all squad members. This evaluation includes squad selection and player rotations during contests.

    Development of Student-Athlete/Coach Relations:

    + Develop and sustain effective communications with team members. Ensure that players are treated with dignity at all times and that the overall welfare of the student-athletes under your charge is always a top priority.

    + Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes.

    + Monitor academic progress of each team member and refer them to the appropriate departments for assistance when required.

    + Ensure that the student-athletes and staff conduct themselves on and off the field in such a way as to bring credit to their team and to Hobart College. The Athletic Code of Conduct is an invaluable tool in this regard.

    Staff Development:

    + Work closely with assistant coaches in a mentoring role to enhance their professional development. This includes assignment of significant, specific responsibilities, as well as encouragement and support of their learning opportunities.

    + Establish an effective and fair performance evaluation and dialogue with each staff member.

    Recruiting of prospective student-athletes:

    + The head coach is responsible for the development and implementation of an effective plan to identify, evaluate, communicate with, and attract the best possible student-athletes to Hobart College. HWS is fully committed to supporting the lacrosse program financially and its prospective athletes through the admissions process.

    + It is the head coach’s duty to make certain that this recruitment plan follows appropriate NCAA rules and regulations. Annual recruiting rules certification is part of this process.

    + Develop a positive and effective working relationship with the admissions, financial aid and advancement offices and manage a full allotment of 12.6 scholarships for the 2026-27 season.

    Public Relations/Alumni Support development:

    + Because of the unique nature and history of the program, a positive working relationship with the Office of Communications and area media is essential.

    + Communication with alumni and friends of the program is essential for positive public relations and some financial support. Special events, such as alumni games, dinners and receptions are part of this function.

    + Community involvement through speaking engagements, clinics and public service projects are a significant part of this responsibility.

    + Membership in and involvement with the appropriate professional associations such as the USILA, NCAA and U.S. Lacrosse Coaches Association.

    OTHER INFORMATION:

    This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible, administrative salaried position. This position description is not all-inclusive as other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned. Annual salary range is $110,000 - $140,000.

     

    Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree is preferred. Previous intercollegiate and administrative experience is required. The candidate should have proven organizational, administrative, and managerial skills with demonstrated public relations and fund-raising abilities. An overall knowledge of NCAA rules and procedures is required. Proven abilities in the organizational and instructional aspects of coaching. Demonstrated effectiveness in the recruitment of student athletes. Ability to work effectively with college students. A desire to work within the framework of all HWS departmental policies and requirements.
