Position Summary:
Reports to the CERT Commander - Sgt. Responsible for rapid response to any emergency or high-risk incident occurring at the facility and any routine incident when additional resources may be required. Rapidly evaluates the situation and determines tactical objectives in compliance with American Correctional Association (ACA) standards, Management & Training Corporation (MTC), and Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) directives.
Essential Functions:
1. Serves as a member of the CERT team responding to both routine and serious incidents within the facility consistently while protecting the safety of the public, staff, and offenders while minimizing damage to property.
2. Assumes command upon arrival of the incident. Stabilizes, isolates, and contains the incident providing for the preservation of the scene. Removes the threat to security and obtains treatment for any staff and/or offenders injured during the incident. Prepares and completes all written reports and required documentation immediately following the conclusion of the incident.
3. Attends and must pass specialized weapons and tactical training, including physically demanding endurance and strength training.
4. Participates in critical incident debriefing to identify operational concerns and to ensure complete and accurate written and photographic documentation of the incident.
5. Adheres to post orders and standard operating procedures for the Incident Command System and CERT team members. Prepares, submits, and retains all incident statements and reports mandated by the facility, MTC, and MDOC.
6. Conducts targeted and random searches of employees, offenders, and visitors, including property and all areas within the facility grounds.
7. Supervise and manage the behavior of offenders throughout assigned tour of duty. Review offender records as needed to prioritize staff and offender safety.
8. Must be available on a 24/7 basis as needed.
9. Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed. Provide regular feedback to staff regarding social skills procedures and intervention techniques.
10. Maintain accountability of staff, offenders and property; and adhere to all safety standards.
It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.
Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Valid driver’s license in the state of Mississippi or Louisiana with an acceptable driving record required, unless waived by management. Minimum of one (1) year experience in law enforcement or military operations experience or minimum one (1) year of specialized experience directly related to the work performed in tactical emergency response and disturbance control tactical response is preferred.
Post Hire Requirements:
Must successfully complete 120-hours of pre-service training including firearms and unarmed self-defense courses. Must attend and pass a Special Weapons, Tactics, and Military-Type CERT basic course. Training and development required to remain in the classification after employment includes annual re-qualification in the use of firearms and the successful completion of unarmed self-defense training. Training and development required to remain in the classification after employment also includes successful completion of an annual physical examination.
