    Description

    The School of Engineering Medicine (SEM) at Texas A&M University seeks a full-time, 11-month non-tenure Instructional Associate Professor or Instructional Professor to serve as Executive Director of Clinical Skills, starting the Summer of 2025 in Houston, TX.

     

    The primary responsibility of the Executive Director of Clinical Skills is to oversee the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical skills in the engineering/medical (EnMed) curriculum, which is the hallmark of SEM. Clinical skills are taught throughout the four years of the curriculum, with a large portion occurring in the pre-clerkship phase. The School of Engineering Medicine is located in Houston, Texas, adjacent to the Texas Medical Center.

     

    This position will report to the Associate Dean for Education and will work closely with leadership, including Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, Department Heads, faculty, and staff, as well as external academic and clinical partners. The successful candidate will play a valuable role in maintaining and enhancing the integrity of our medical and engineering programs. All faculty are expected to conduct scholarly activities, to teach and supervise students in areas relevant to the mission and vision of the school and contribute service to the school.

     

    EnMed is the School of Engineering Medicine’s innovative medical education program, developed in a partnership with the Texas A&M College of Engineering, Texas A&M College of Medicine, and Houston Methodist Hospital, to educate “physicianeers,” a new kind of physician who will create transformational technology to solve health care’s greatest challenges. The EnMed medical education program offers a blended engineering and medicine curriculum with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. EnMed is the nation’s only program that allows graduates to receive both the Master of Engineering and Doctor of Medicine degrees in four years.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Leadership and Oversight

     

    Innovative Curriculum Development and Technologies: Develop, implement, and refine cutting-edge teaching methods, assessments and technologies to prepare students for modern medical practice and clinical competence, including history-taking, physical examination, differential diagnosis development, oral and written presentations, medical documentation, preceptor programs, and patient-centered communication across the four-year medical education program.

     

    Engineering Innovation Integration: As part of SEM’s core mission and vision, partner with the Assistant Dean of Engineering Education to appropriately integrate opportunities for innovation into clinical skills training.

     

    Accreditation Compliance: Ensure the clinical skills curriculum meets all accreditation standards, maintaining the highest quality of education.

     

    Course Oversight: Provide oversight and guidance to course directors and Director of Learning Communities for clinical skills-based courses, ensuring smooth and effective delivery of the curriculum. Including recruiting, training, evaluating faculty and course directors; ensuring accurate and timely delivery of course material and assessments; and enforcement of school and program policies.

     

    Continuous Evaluation: Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Evaluation and Assessment and Phase Assistant Deans to conduct ongoing evaluations, assessing the effectiveness of the curriculum and identifying areas for improvement.

     

    Collaboration: Work closely with and attend regular meetings with faculty members, coordinators, leadership, and partners (College of Medicine, Houston Methodist, Baylor College of Medicine, HSC Clinical learning Resource Center, Office of Interprofessional Practice, Education, & Research) to ensure a comprehensive and effective clinical skills program.

     

    Curriculum Integration: Partner with Phase Assistant Deans to ensure the integration of clinical skills into the overall curriculum and support student wellness.

     

    Performance Feedback: Provide feedback on student performance to academic success and Phase Deans, facilitating continuous quality improvement of clinical curricula and assessments.

     

    Faculty Development: Offer ongoing faculty development for clinical skills course directors, learning community leaders and educators, enhancing their teaching capabilities.

     

    Research and Innovation: Stay abreast of advances and trends in clinical-skills teaching, facilitating research and innovation within the program.

     

    Teaching and Assessment

     

    Simulation and Technology: Leverage simulation facilities and educational technology platforms to enhance learning and assessment experiences.

     

    Teaching Methodologies: Develop and implement new teaching methods to improve student learning outcomes.

     

    Assessment Development: Create formative and summative clinical skills assessments in partnership with course and component directors.

     

    Standards Refinement: Collaborate with the Assistant Dean of Evaluation and Assessment to refine standards for clinical skills assessments and monitor student progress in achieving milestones.

     

    Learning Community Integration: Oversee and collaborate with the Director of Learning Communities to ensure seamless integration of learning community leaders into clinical skills courses.

     

    Facilitating Teaching: Facilitate clinical skills teaching sessions, providing hands-on guidance and support to students.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications:

    Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree with a minimum of five years of experience in clinical practice

     

    Experience in instructing and mentoring medical students

     

    Demonstrated excellence in leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills

    Preferred Qualifications

    Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree with a minimum of seven years of experience in clinical practice

    Minimum of four years of experience as a faculty member at a medical school teaching clinical skills

    Proven track record in leading clinical skills programs and teams (e.g., program director, residency director, or clerkship director)
