    This is an informational post outlining the hiring process for Police Officers with the Tigard Police Department. Please read below for more information about our testing and hiring process.

    Examples of Duties

     

    Tigard Police Officers perform a wide range of law enforcement and crime prevention work, including patrol and investigation. Sworn officers enforce state and local laws, regulations and ordinances and perform a variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following:

     

    + Responds to a variety of radio calls including theft, domestic disturbances, welfare checks and CPR calls. Investigates crashes, deaths, and criminal complaints. Makes arrests and issues citations when required.

    + Patrols roads, highways, businesses and residential areas of the City. Enforces applicable criminal and traffic laws. Prepares case records and reports. Participates in the prosecution of cases in court.

    + Serves criminal warrants, applicable court orders, and subpoenas.

    + Accomplishes the Police Department Mission to “to protect and serve all who live, play and work in Tigard.”

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is considered qualifying.

     

    A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and one (1) year of experience working with the public. Some college-level coursework in and/or volunteer law enforcement experience are desirable.

    Licenses and Certifications:

    + Possession of a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

    Other Requirements:

    + Must be a U.S. citizen

    + Must be 21 years or older at the time of hire

    + Must pass ORPAT (see below)

    + Must be able to read and write the English language

    + Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred

     

    Supplemental Information

     

    The City of Tigard has contracted with National Testing Network (NTN) to conduct a portion of our entry-level recruitment and testing process for police officer positions.

     

    Before you fill out the police officer job application, we ask that you please complete your NTN computer test. (This requirement is waived if you have a 4-year bachelor’s degree; please email us ([email protected]?subject=Request%20to%20Waive%20NTN) to waive this requirement.)

Please be aware there is a fee associated with taking this test.

     

    Proctored tests at alternative sites (NTN Testing Centers) are available upon request. For additional information, interested candidates are encouraged to call 855-821-3761.

    On the National Testing Network website:

    + Go to https://nationaltestingnetwork.com/publicsafetyjobs/search.cfm?position=1&state=OREGON.

    + Select the Tigard Police Department, hit continue.

    + Confirm you meet the requirements, hit continue.

    + Select your testing location (in-person or virtual), hit continue and follow the additional instructions. Please note: if you don’t have account on NTN’s website you will need to create one.

     

    Applicants who pass the written test with a score of at least 70% will be invited to submit a job application. Once the application is received, candidates will be scheduled for an in-person interview called an oral board.

     

    The City of Tigard will request proof of passing ORPAT (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgEJ69s5h3g) scores and may provide opportunities for those who have not passed the ORPAT to do so prior to entering the background process. A passing ORPAT score must be from within the last 12 months.

    After successful completion of the required NTN test, applicants can expect the following:

    + Invitation to apply through the city's online application system (create a profile in advance (http://www.governmentjobs.com/) )

    + In-person interview (called an Oral Board) - scheduled regularly during the next 1-3 months; invitation to interview will be extended when passing NTN scores have been received

    + ORPAT (if needed)

    + Suitability Evaluation (a test proctored at Tigard PD)

    + Background Investigation - Candidate history must include an extraordinary level of integrity and honesty

    + Interview with the Chief of Police

    Upon conditional job offer, you will be required to undergo:

    + Psychological Evaluation

    + Medical Examination

    + Drug Test
