WGL - Communications Specialist, External
Washington Gas is seeking a skilled Communications Specialist to support and execute external communications strategies that enhance our brand and reputation. This role is ideal for a communications professional with a strong foundation in media relations or project management, who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
You Will:
+ Serve as the primary point of contact for media inquiries and external communications
+ Develop and implement proactive media strategies to support business objectives
+ Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets
+ Draft and edit a range of materials, including press releases, key messages, op-eds, and executive talking points
+ Monitor media coverage and industry trends, providing insights and recommendations to senior leadership
+ Support crisis communications as a Public Information Officer, including during emergencies
+ Collaborate with internal teams to align messaging and ensure consistency across channels
+ Manage and curate content for social media platforms, optimizing engagement and reach
You Have:
+ 2–4 years of experience in communications, with a focus on media relations or project management
+ Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.
+ Proven ability to translate complex topics into clear, compelling content
+ Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities under pressure
+ Experience working with cross-functional teams and senior leaders
+ Knowledge of the energy or utilities sector is an asset.
+ Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field
We offer a competitive salary range of $78,000 to $113,500 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
