    NURSING SUPERVISOR (Medical Short Stay Units)

    Job Summary

    This position works with patients and staff in the Medical Short Stay Units.

     

    Patients in the Medical Short Stay Units mainly originate from the Emergency Department. The Medical Short Stay Units also provide care to Palliative Care patients.

     

    Patients in the Medical Short Stay Units have a general expected LOS of between 24 and 72 hours.

     

    Medical Short Stay units provide cardiac monitoring.

     

    Patient care focuses on developed nursing assessment, the provision of care to meet acute physical needs and patient/family education.

    Responsibilities*

    To assist the Department Clinical Nursing Director in planning and management of patient care services.

     

    To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education and research.

     

    To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with Michigan Medicine's mission and goal statements.

     

    To assist in managing budgets, payroll, commodities, staffing/scheduling, hiring and staff performance reviews.

     

    The Clinical Nurse Supervisor will participate in new program development and implementation; plan, organize and evaluate patient care standards, guidelines and educational activities and monitor and implement the continuous quality improvement programs.

     

    Fosters collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.

     

    Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.

     

    The position reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director.

    Clinical Practice:

    Schedule flexibility will be necessary, including evening, night and weekend shifts to provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching , support and evaluation of staff on all shifts.

     

    Expected staffing component

    Management of Clinical Area:

    Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.

     

    Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.

     

    Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.

     

    Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.

     

    Participate in the monitoring of department payroll and commodity expenditures.

     

    Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.

     

    Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.

     

    Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks.

     

    Collaborate with Educational Coordinator to implement competency-based education.

     

    Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care that will ensure safe patient care.

     

    Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

     

    Quality Assurance

     

    Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.

     

    Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.

     

    Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

    Promote Lean principles

    **Expectations of the position:** Excellent communication skills; verbal and written as demonstrated by recent performance evaluations or letters of recommendation.

     

    Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to direct nursing practice, delegate, evaluate outcomes, prioritize problem solving and successfully resolve conflicts.

     

    High level of self-motivation and commitment to improving patient outcomes and development of staff.

     

    Evidence of ability to assess, interpret and analyze clinical information.Demonstrated ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers and other staff.

    Required Qualifications*

    Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.

    Required Educational Requirements:

    Applicant must meet one of the following:

    * Bachelor's degree in Nursing OR

    * Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing

    + Minimum five (5) years of Registered Nurse experience.

    + Minimum two (2) years (within the last 5 years) RN experience in adult medical surgical nursing.

    + Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC).     Desired Qualifications*

    + Previous experience as a health care supervisor, preferably in an adult patient population inpatient or short-stay unit.

    + Recent adult short-stay RN experience

    + Experience with EPIC Home Health software

    + Computer proficiency in use of Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and ability to extract data from University of Michigan supported computer databases

    + Master's degree in Nursing

    + Demonstrated professional oral and written communication skills

    + Demonstrated leadership skills

    + Proven ability to facilitate change

    + Knowledge of Michigan Medicine's policies and practice.

    + Knowledge of Lean principles

     

    Work Schedule

     

    Hours/Week: 40 hours

     

    Shift: Variable but predominantly off shift
