    Responsibilities:

    GENERAL PURPOSE

    There is a full-time research technician II available in the Maquat Lab to assist in day-to-day operations and perform experiments and to study the metabolism of RNA in human diseases. The research employs cutting edge technologies in mammalian-cell molecular biology, genomics, and biochemistry. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, Microbiology, or a related field, as well as good organizational and interpersonal skills.

    SUPERVISION: This position reports to Lynne Maquat, Ph.D. After a period of initial guidance and training, this position requires that the individual be able to execute experiments independently, analyze data that is generated, and help troubleshoot results. This person will also occasionally help train and/or guide others in existing lab techniques.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Performing molecular biological techniques:

    + plasmid vector construction, analysis and production.

    + Will be shown initially but subsequently techniques will be performed independently.

    Analysis of molecular biological manipulations:

    + RNA and protein purification from bacterial, insect and mammalian cells, UV/Vis spectrophotometry, agarose gel electrophoresis

    + PAGE; reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and primer design using available computer programs; western blot hybridization; use of Phosphor imaginer to quantitate data.

    + Will be shown initially but subsequently manipulations will be performed independently.

    + Will need to understand theory, think independently, maintain a research notebook (see below), and interpret results.

    Managing the lab:

    + Maintaining lab equipment including organizing warranty information; placing routine orders for supplies; placing phone calls for service repairs; performing lab surveys for radiation safety; documenting waste/disposal

    + Overseeing all paperwork that pertains to keeping the lab active, making sure the lab is in compliance with all rules and regulations

    + Sending reagents to colleagues who request them and keeping track of what was sent where

    + And over-seeing the lab aide and his/her functions in preparing clean and RNase-free labware, filing journals, making bacterial plates and simple solutions and running errands.

    + Will be shown initially but subsequently manipulations will be performed independently.

    + Successful candidate will need self-initiated lab oversight when such oversight is required.

    Documenting experiments:

    + Requires documentation of all lab activities, procedures and modifications, and experimental results obtained from work done at the bench.

    + This includes not only the personal notebook, but lab notebooks that have information of interest to all lab members.

    + These notebooks document nucleic acids or proteins, the construction of new expression vectors, or the construction of bacterial and mammalian-cell stocks.

    + Responsibility also extends to other lab members, making sure that they properly document all new materials received in the lab.

    Orienting and training new lab members:

    + Any new graduate students, rotating or permanent, as well as new post-docs and visiting scientists require training in lab methods and procedures.

    + Overseeing undergraduate student lab helper.

     

    Other duties as assigned.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    + Associate's degree in appropriate discipline preferred.

    + Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Chemistry, Microbiology, or a related field Preferred.

    + 2-3 years specialized experience in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

    + Some related laboratory experience preferred.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    + Working knowledge of MS Office programs (Word, Powerpoint, and Excel) preferred.

    + Good interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication preferred.

    + Strong attention to detail and organizational skills preferred.
