    _The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._

    Responsibilities:

    GENERAL PURPOSE

    Master optician to produce precision optical components by grinding, polishing, beveling, test plating and cleaning glass or other optical materials. Evaluate optical drawings in order to determine best fabrication method. Devise custom tooling as needed for fabrication. Operate metrology equipment for in-process evaluation and final testing.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    The Fab Shop Manager works within the Optical Manufacturing Group and duties include the following:

    + Operate continuous polishers up to 350mm diameter.

    + Operate conventional grinding machines.

    + Operate double-sided grinding and polishing machines up to 4” diameter optics.

    + Maintain and clean equipment.

    + Shaping optical materials to fabricate mirrors and precision parallel plates

    + Determine best sequence of operations for each specific job.

    + Assist with tooling design needed for fabrication processes.

    + Execute more complex setups for unique projects.

    + Interpret optical drawings in order to manufacture parts to specifications.

    + Use of micrometers, calipers, profilometers, auto-collimators and interferometers to ensure parts meet dimensional and surface accuracy requirements.

    + Organize, inventory, and order spare supplies for the shop.

    + Interact with scientists, engineers and graduate students to manufacture custom parts.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    + Associate's degree in optical fabrication or optical systems plus ten year’s work experience in optics manufacture or a relevant technical field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Previous experience with grinding and polishing equipment is required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    + The position will require the ability to manipulate heavy glass substrates.

    + Strong mechanical and problem-solving skills are essential along with the ability to work independently.

    + The willingness to interact with fellow technicians, scientists, students, and vendors with a friendly and professional attitude is important.
