The System Offices is one of several system members within the Texas A&M University System representing one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a network of 11 universities, a comprehensive health science center, eight state agencies, and the RELLIS Campus. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC), part of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS), invites applications for a full-time Technologist.
The Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC) (https://bcdc.tamus.edu/) - located on the 2,300-acre RELLIS Campus in Bryan, TX - is an ecosystem for agile technology development and service-member-inspired research. The BCDC is the result of a partnership between the Department of Defense, Texas A&M University System, and the State of Texas. The $200 million complex is designed to bring together researchers from U.S. universities, the military, and the private sector for collaboration, demonstrations, and high-tech testing of initiatives to help accelerate military innovation for our nation’s defense. Job Description Summary:
The Technologist - Test Systems Engineer independently applies advanced knowledge of scientific research or engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields al the George H.W. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC). Under the general supervision of the BCDC Data Analytics Lead, the Technologist will 1) implement end-to-end data acquisition, curation, analysis, and range control solutions for BCOC research, experimentation, and test events; 2) provide project management for test systems acquisition and modernization, and 3) provide direct support lo research and test teams during event planning, preparation, event conduct, and reporting. The Technologist will work with partners internal lo the Texas A&M University System, BCDC research teams, and external (e.g., government organizations, industry, labs) to develop and integrate data and range instrumentation support, the network and electromagnetic environment, threats, and the physical test ranges. They will collaborate with customers and sponsors to integrate their systems into the BCDC's data, computational, and synthetic environments. This engineer will advise on the use of data acquisition and visualization capabilities, federations and range architectures to support the full range of IPG, BAM, and BCDC missions: research, range instrumentation and operations, and data fusion and visualization. (Note: the IPG is the primary BCDC research and test capability that this engineer will support; however, they will also support BAM activities as required).
The Innovation Proving Grounds (IPG) provides an outdoor test and experimentation facility capable of rigorously assessing a myriad of technologies, sensors, platforms, networks and testing processes in an operationally relevant environment. It is postured to support the test and evaluation of technology across the Technology Readiness Levels, ranging from innovative prototypes lo fully developed programs. Key to the IPG is its agile approach to testing and test processes which position it as a Proving Ground for Proving Grounds.
Responsibilities:
- Configure, populate, sustain, and integrate data acquisition and range control systems and models; IPG capabilities include multiple variants of the custom Data Acquisition Systems (DAS), COTS instrumentation (spectrum surveillance, radars, radios, weather stations), Unreal implementations, Exata, and commercial modeling tools.- Provides matrix support and expertise to working groups and projects spanning the Texas A&M University System other external partners across differing technology domains.- Provide direct support to data support teams including simulation validation of observed results, augmentation of results through simulation of "edge cases", and visual summarization to provide immersive experience of test and experimentation results.- Plan, conduct, and report verification and validation (V&V) activities for research and test technologies to support accreditation for their acquisition and employment during events.- Provides direct support to IPG range and data systems operations during all event phases: plan/prepare, execution, analysis and reporting, and after-action review; may also be called upon to augment BAM operations.- Facilitate and troubleshoot range network architecture by configuring network devices, diagnosing connectivity issues, and ensuring system reliability.- Mentor student workers and capstone teams by providing technical guidance and assisting with project execution.- Develop and maintain data visualization tools to support analysis and decision-making.- Curate and organize post-event data by cleansing, structuring, and storing datasets for analysis and reporting.- Maintain and support range instrumentation systems for accurate data collection and operation, troubleshooting any hardware or software issues.- Document the internal data ecosystem, including network shares, credential management, and outlines of operational workflows for data access and usage.
- Document instrumentation usage and provide training to team members, internal and external customers.- Provide range support (as needed) in diverse weather and environmental conditions to ensure operational continuity.- Other duties as required.
Education and Experience:
Technologist - Test Systems Engineer, Level I
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (or related field) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Technologist - Test Systems Engineer, Level II
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (or related field) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Two years of relevant experience.
Technologist - Test Systems Engineer, Level III
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (or related field) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Four years of relevant experience.
Registration, Certifications, and Licenses:
- Must be able to gain and maintain a DoD (Department of Defense) security clearance.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills. - Advanced skill in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, audio/video tools, collaboration and other software.- Excellent knowledge of business correspondence formatting, grammar and punctuation. - Ability to handle confidential and time sensitive issues.- Experience with Python, SQL. - Familiarity with network topologies and wireless network architecture. - Familiarity with operating systems like Ubuntu, Linux, Windows, containerized environments (e.g., Docker).
- Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Wireless: mesh radios, 4G, 5G.- Familiarity with GIS data.- Experience with shell scripting, C, Ruby, JavaScript, NoSQL.- Experience with Robot Operating Systems (ROS, ROS2).
