    The North Polk Community School District is a progressive educational community located in the Des Moines metro area just north of Ankeny serving the communities of Alleman, Elkhart, Polk City, and Sheldahl. The District proudly serves over 2200 learners from preschool through 12th grade in five buildings (West Elementary, PK-2nd; Central Elementary, PK-5th, Big Creek Elementary, 3rd-5th; Middle School, 6th-8th; and High School, 9th-12th).

     

    Central Elementary, located in Alleman, is seeking to hire a school counselor that works collaboratively with administration, school staff, families, students and community partners to deliver a comprehensive school counseling program ensuring learning for all by learning from all.

    Compensation:

    Position Criteria:

    + Required: Current State of Iowa Elementary Counseling License and an M.A. in elementary (K-8) school counseling.

    + This position requires the following endorsement: K-8 Professional School Counselor (172)

    Performance responsibilities:

    + Provide whole group guidance instruction to TK-5th grade students.

    + Plan, implement, and evaluate learning in accordance with established district guidance curriculum expectations.

    + Create a classroom environment that is aligned to research-based instruction and conducive to learning as well as appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.

    + Apply appropriate support strategies such as individual counseling, small group sessions, and social skills training to address students' personal, social, and academic needs.

    + Offer individual and group counseling to promote students’ self-awareness, emotional growth, and effective coping skills.

    + Design and execute tailored intervention plans with specific strategies, involving collaboration with families and caregivers as needed.

    + Maintain a consistent and supportive presence to ensure students can access counseling services that foster maturity, self-understanding, and personal development.

    + Support for students and staff with Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) and Leader In Me (LIM) in all settings.

    + Help create, implement, and maintain student 504 plans.

    + Work collaboratively with at-risk teams to develop plans and programs that support our multi-tiered behavior system and restorative practices.

    + Actively participate in the related arts collaborative team.

    + Analyzes and uses data regularly to help inform decisions about interventions and programming.

    + Provides support and assistance to students and families as they navigate crisis and emergency situations.

    Professional responsibilities:

    + Adheres to the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) Standards.

    + Demonstrates positive interpersonal relationships and works cooperatively with students, parents and colleagues.

    + Projects a positive image as an educator in the school and community.

    + Demonstrates initiative and ability to work without close supervision.

    + Displays a positive attitude and adjusts to new changing situations.

    + Meets deadlines, is punctual, and completes assigned tasks with minimal assistance.

    + Seeks opportunities to improve professional competence through professional development activities.

    + Collaborates with colleagues to plan and implement professional development activities to address school improvement.

    + Participates in discussion or activities focused on using research to improve teaching and learning.

    + Takes an active interest in the school and community. Attends meetings and serves on staff/district committees.

    + Implements all district policies and expected practices.

    + Other duties as assigned by the principal.

    Physical Requirements:

    Bending, carrying, climbing, travel between job sites, lifting, pushing-pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, and walking
