    Job Summary and Qualifications

    Position summary:

    Performs various functions to assist the Pharmacist in providing medications for inpatients and outpatients at the Hospital. Plays an instrumental role in orienting and training new Technicians in the department. Is required to perform various clerical and housekeeping duties as needed.

    + Must perform all work quickly and accurately in a neat and organized manner with attention to detail due to the chance for frequent interruptions.

    + Obtains good communication and interpersonal skills as well as being able to take instructions.

    + Must be highly motivated and serve as a role model for other Pharmacy Staff.

    + Is dependable, has good attendance and has the ability to work and communicate with all employees

    + Demonstrates good communication skills including written, verbal, nonverbal (body language), and interpersonal manners

    + Demonstrates ability and willingness to plan and coordinate the workday so as to accomplish required tasks accurately

    Position responsibilities:

    + Quickly and accurately fill all medication orders and arrange them neatly for the Pharmacist to check

    + Systematically deliver patient medications and other supplies to the various Nursing Units every hour or more often if necessary. Routinely checks for items that should be returned to the Pharmacy on these delivery runs

    + Fill “Floor Stock Traveling Requisition” orders and deliver these items to the Nursing Unit. Understand the process to reconcile Nursing Unit charges at the end of each month

    + Package medications in unit dose containers as needed and complete all the necessary documentation

    + Prepare I.V. admixtures daily using proper aseptic technique

    + Prepare the daily “I.V. Status Worksheet” and check all active patient I.V. orders with the chart on the Nursing Unit. Make all necessary I.V. time adjustments on a daily basis in the computer system.

    + Prepare specialty I.V. products such as TPN solutions. Understands the appropriate precautions needed when working with Chemotherapy agents.

    + Deliver narcotic stock to each Nursing Unit and document each item correctly on the “Narcotic Administration Record”

    + Restock medications to the appropriate location when returned to the Pharmacy upon patient discharge or order discontinuation. The Technician must understand which items may be restocked or credited and which items must be destroyed on return to the Pharmacy

    + Understand the computer processes performed on a daily basis to assist the Pharmacist in processing medication orders

    + Check each Nursing Unit on a regular basis for discontinued medications or I.V. solutions to be returned to the Pharmacy

    + Perform monthly Nursing Unit Inspections

    + Restock and check the automated dispensing machines, various medication carts and supply boxes provided by the Pharmacy Department. This includes the Nursing Unit crash carts.

    + Answer the telephone and refer calls and/or messages to the appropriate Pharmacy personnel

    + Check in the Wholesaler orders and process invoices according to Departmental Policies.

    + Keep inventory neat and orderly. Frequently check medication inventory for outdated and short dated items

    + Prepare and package outdated medications for return to the manufacturer.

    + Participate in Departmental inventory whenever necessary

    + Clean and organize various areas of the Pharmacy as required

    + Process patient charges through the computer system on a daily basis when necessary.

    + Attend Code of Conduct training course annually

    + Demonstrate an understanding of and adherence to HCA’s Code of Conduct

    + Demonstrates conduct that is reflective of THRH’s commitment to HCA’s Code of Conduct

    + Understands and satisfies the needs of the patient population appropriate to the age of the patient served (adults, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric, and parents of neonates)

    + Understand formulary substitution, management and location of formulary items, and non-formulary request system.

    + Adheres to the Standards of Behavior for Terre Haute Regional Hospital as per the Customer Relations Policy

    What qualifications you will need:

    Essential educational/licensure, skills and experience:

    + Must have Pharmacy Technician in Training or Pharmacy Technician license from the State of Indiana.

    + All of the instructions on how to obtain/apply for Pharmacy Tech in Training or Pharmacy Tech license are on the Indiana Board of Pharmacy website under Technician License Certification

    + BLS must be maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital.

    Valued but not required educational/licensure, skills and experience:

    + Strong problem-solving skills.

    + Previous experience as a Pharmacy Technician along with advanced experience or knowledge in computer use, dose calculations, medical terminology, and medical abbreviations

    + Above average communication skills in all forms

    + Understands and satisfies the needs of the patient population appropriate to the age of the patient served (adults, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric, and parents of neonates)
