    Position Title:

    Entry Level Firefighter - January 2026 Academy (Recruit Class 57)

    Job Description:

    We are looking for Entry Level Firefighters to join our Salt Lake City team!

     

    Salary Range: $58,989 to $94,126 annually.

    About the Position:

    Salt Lake City Firefighters perform fire suppression, rescue, and property conservation activities. Firefighters act as first responders as they provide basic life support and emergency care to sudden illness or accident victims. This position will also participate in or conduct fire prevention activities including inspection, code enforcement, and public education, as well as participate in drills and other department training activities.

     

    This is specialized work performed in accordance with National and Salt Lake City Fire Department performance and training standards. All persons hired in this position are required to achieve journey-level certification by completing a Utah State Department of Labor recognized and approved apprenticeship program.

    About the Team:

    The Salt Lake City Fire Department has over 350 members serving 200,000 residents, with a business and tourism population that nearly doubles this number, within the city’s 110 square miles.

    Work Schedule:

    We operate on a three-platoon system with crews rotating every 48 hours across 14 fire stations. Firefighters work one 48-hour consecutive shift and then are scheduled off for 96 hours.

    This position is eligible for full city benefits, including:

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Applicants must be 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED equivalent, possess a valid driver’s license, and be eligible to work in the US on or before the day the applicant takes the written exam.

    In addition to the application, candidates must complete the National Testing Network (NTN) Written Exam, and a National Testing Network (NTN) Online Video Recorded Interview no later than August 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. (MST) to be considered.     Testing Process:

    + National Testing Network (NTN) FireTEAM Written Exam - 20%

    + National Testing Network Online Video Recorded Interview – 30%

    + Oral Board Assessment - 50%

    + Task Performance Assessment for Candidates (TPAC) - Pass/Fail

     

    Salt Lake City Fire Department will also accept valid CPAT certificates in place of passing the TPAC.

    Method of Scoring and Ranking:

    An applicant’s final score will be obtained by adding the weighted numerically scored portions of the written examination, online video recorded interview, and oral board assessment. The candidates will be ranked according to their final score and placed on the list.

    Preference points will then be added to that score as follows:

    + NREMT/Utah Paramedic: 1% point

    + Veteran: 5% points

    + Disabled Veteran: 10% points

    + Taking or possessing without prescription or experimenting with any of the drugs in the following categories will be disqualifying within one (1) year of the date of application: Cannabis substances (i.e., marijuana, hashish, hash oil, etc.); and mushrooms.

    + Been charged, convicted, or may be convicted of a felony.
