Hours: 8:00AM – 4:00PM
Job Description: The Behavior Specialist provides direct behavioral services to students enrolled in BOCES programs. The behavior specialist supports classroom teams in crisis management, assessment of student behavior and planning for proactive behavioral interventions and skill development. Duties of this job require a knowledge of child development, developmental disabilities, behavioral analysis, behavioral intervention techniques and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
General Duties: 1. Support students across Erie 1 BOCES Special Education programs. 2. Works with individual students on building social/emotional/behavioral skills. 3. Assists in crisis management including physically intervening when a student displays behavior that are harmful to themselves or others. 4. Conduct Functional Behavioral Assessments. 5. Serve on student support teams. 6. Provide consultation to classroom teams. 7. Provide consultation to administrators regarding student support plans. 8. Train school staff on best practices for support of students in classrooms 9. Assists educational teams in implementing proactive behavioral strategies to support individual students, as well as, reinforcing newly acquired skills. 10. All additional tasks or duties as assigned by Supervisor or Director
Job Qualifications
Minimum Civil Service Qualifications:
Must hold permanent status as a Specialist, Mental Health and Behavior Support; OR; Must be reachable on current Specialist, Mental health and Behavior Support civil service list; OR; Must meet minimum qualifications for provisional* appointment as follows:
A) Master's degree in education or related field and Special Education Certification; with two years experience creating Behavior Intervention Programs, developing assessment of student needs through Functional Behavior Assessment, teaching coping skills and alternative behavior; OR;
B) Bachelor's degree in education or related field and Special Education Certification; with three years experience creating Behavior Intervention Programs, developing assessment of student needs through Functional Behavior Assessment, teaching coping skills and alternative behaviors; OR;
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
Additional Qualifications
+ The successful provisional* candidate will be required to sit for an upcoming civil service exam for the title of SPECIALIST, MENTAL HEALTH AND BEHAVIOR SUPPORT
+ Candidate must hold a valid teaching certificate in the area of Students with Disabilities.
+ Certification as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst may be considered in lieu of a teaching certificate.
