The Valent BioSciences manufacturing site located on an expansive 73-acre site in Osage, IA is a state of the art 130,000 square foot plant and is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Valent BioSciences broad portfolio of fermentation products.
Description of Job:
As a Vector Biology Bioassay Specialist at Valent BioSciences, you will be responsible for testing of in-process and final product for Valent BioSciences, LLC. You will act as a technical expert within the organization, with extensive knowledge related to laboratory insect colony rearing (primarily mosquito) and multi-species bioassay testing - coordinating workflow and scheduling the insects for testing purposes as well as troubleshooting rearing operations as needed. In this role, you must adhere to testing and rearing schedules to accomplish a high volume of critical work without compromising the integrity of the results, while still meeting the needs of manufacturing.
Essential Functions:
+ Bioassay Conduct bioassay testing on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished goods.
+ Record test results and perform data entry in Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
+ Maintain and calibrate lab equipment and instrumentation; perform routine cleaning.
+ Analyze insect bioassay results using probit analysis with Excel and statistical software.
+ Rear and maintain high-quality insect colonies; prepare insect diets and standards as needed.
+ Act as a technical resource for troubleshooting, process improvement, and colony management.
+ Plan and execute Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) studies in compliance with regulations.
+ Maintain bioassay test methods and ensure lab procedures meet ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
+ Lead investigations into insectary or bioassay issues; document findings per protocol.
+ Support ergonomic and efficiency improvements within the lab.
+ Must be flexible to work off-shift, weekends, or overtime as needed.
+ Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ BA/BS degree in Biology, Entomology, or closely related field desired. Relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of degree.
+ 5+ years’ experience with mosquito rearing and colony maintenance in a laboratory setting strongly desired.
+ Previous experience with bioassay test methods is required.
+ Proficient with Good Aseptic Technique.
+ Experience with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
+ Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) experience or knowledge is beneficial.
+ Understanding of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
+ Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and other spreadsheet/database software.
+ Good inter-departmental communication (written / verbal), problem-solving, and decision-making required.
+ Ability to work with and relate to all levels of personnel.
+ Ability to comprehend, understand and write scientific procedures.
+ Maintains compliance with all department and company policies and procedures.
+ Data management and computer-generated reports experience preferred.
+ Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data.

Base Salary: The estimated annual base salary for this position ranges from: $25.56 to 30.32/hour. Individual pay is based upon location, skills, experience, and other relevant factors.
Incentives: All full-time employees are eligible for an incentive program or profit-sharing program in addition to their base salary.
