Summary The purpose of the position is to supplement the permanent Park Ranger workforce by performing various "generalist" duties designed to: (1) facilitate visitor understanding of park resources; (2) facilitate visitor enjoyment of the park and its resources; (3) facilitate and induce visitor behavior consistent with resource protection and to gain friendly compliance with the laws and rules for safe use of the park; and (4) encourage visitors to develop a sense of stewardship for park resources. Responsibilities The selectee will be assigned to a remote work site to provide assistance to the visitor services and resource protection division. The incumbent will operate a motorboat to conduct campground patrols or to access remote areas for foot patrols, provide emergency medical services, perform search and rescue operations, provide information regarding Federal, park, and state regulations, provide visitor information, resource education, and assistance, perform minor maintain campgrounds and associated facilities as well, as assist with issuance of permits and collection of park recreation fees on a needed basis. Isle Royale National Park is a large, remote and isolated island in northwestern Lake Superior. Isle Royale is located approximately 70 miles north of the park's administrative headquarters in Houghton, MI. Isle Royale is 99% federally designated Wilderness, with numerous lakes and native wildlife such as moose and wolves, the park offers a superb setting for recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, canoeing, backpacking, camping, fishing, hiking and more. The incumbent will be stationed on the island. There are no roads, no cell phone coverage, limited amenities and limited opportunity to travel to the mainland. Internet access for personal business on government computers is permitted during non-business hours. Groceries and other supplies are delivered weekly or bi-weekly depending on the incumbent's specific duty station on the island. To protect Isle Royale's wildlife from disease and other illnesses, pets are prohibited. Training Provided for the following: Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC), 24 hours EMT CE or Refresher hours, 8-hour wildland firefighter refresher as needed. Incumbent will gain significant small boat handling experience and may have opportunities to gain large (27-31') boat handling experience to include marine electronics, reduced visibility night and fog navigation, towing. For more information about this park, please visit Isle Royale National Park Physical Demands: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, driving, bending, and the incumbent must have the ability to routinely carry backpacks of up to 50 pounds in steep terrain and in adverse weather conditions. Working Conditions: The work is performed in a setting in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, or adverse weather conditions. You must currently possess or will possess by entry on duty a National Registry EMR-Emergency Medical Responder Certification (or higher). You must maintain current, valid status during the season. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree in major study -- natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. from an accredited college or university. National parks are among the most remarkable places in America for recreation, learning, and inspiration. The work done by park ranger-interpreters through effective interpretive and educational programs encourages the development of a personal stewardship ethic and broadens public support for preserving and protecting park resources, so that they may be enjoyed by present and future generations.
