Job Summary:
The pharmacy buyer/technician is responsible for the selection, procurement, and distribution of pharmaceuticals with the advice and direction of SJH pharmacists.
Job Results & Essential Function
+ Determines items to be ordered, based upon pre-established pars or utilization; this requires the cooperation of the technical and clinical staff.
+ Serves as a liaison between wholesaler, vendors, GPO and the department.
+ Places orders daily, directly to the wholesaler via the wholesalers website, or secondary means if the website should be inaccessible or not functioning.
+ Places orders directly to vendors other than the wholesaler, should items be available by direct order only.
+ Enters all purchase order information directly into Willow/Epic
+ Receives and verifies all items ordered versus items received . Receives and restocks inventory upon receipt of orders from the supplier (except controlled drugs).
+ Signs and codes all PO's and invoices, and sends them to accounts payable.
+ Maintains relationships with "short supply" vendors as needed.
+ Verifies that all received items can be scanned.
+ Must be familiar with procedures allowing uninterrupted supply and distribution of medications in the event of computer down time.
+ Participates in bi-annual inventory.
+ Orders supplies from in-house sources such as purchasing and SPD.
+ Generates a computer refill list for non-Pyxis stocked items for patient cassette refills.
+ Fills medications from computer generated labels, both new and refill.
+ Runs the necessary Pyxis reports to charge patients and replace stock as necessary.
+ Fills stock requisitions and charges the appropriate unit.
+ Assures adequate inventory levels are maintained by writing needed items on the reorder sheet.
+ Makes regular rounds to the nursing units to pick up orders and deliver medications. Also delivers items to the loading dock for distribution to off-site locations.
+ May need to travel to off-site locations to maintain stock functions.
+ Answers the telephone using appropriate technique (identifies self and department) and relays information or messages accordingly.
+ Maintains the department in a clean and orderly manner.
+ Performs pharmacy and nursing unit inspections, including Pyxis, for outdated medications.
+ Organizes outdated or overstock medication for return to the appropriate parties for credit or destruction.
+ Repacks bulk medications into unit doses, calculating the expiration date, using the appropriate equipment.
+ Understands the various "code" situations and is able to function while they are happening.
Requirements
Education & Experience
Must be a High School graduate with computer skills. Previous pharmacy technician and buyer experience preferred.

Physical Demands
Approximate 50/50 split between sitting for computer work and standing or walking. Must be able to lift and carry at least 20 pounds.
Mental Demands
Must possess attention to detail, and easily distinguish between drug names that either look or sound similar. Must be able to remain calm and function in stressful situations.
Interactions
The greatest degree of interaction will be with other pharmacy employees. Other interaction will be with other department staff and physicians and nurses.
Work Conditions
Most activity takes place in the pharmacy department. Other areas of the hospital will be visited as will some off campus sites where drugs are used.
Hazards
Potential exposures to NIOSH listed hazardous drugs in healthcare settings.
