The Department of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs has an outstanding opportunity for a Program Manager Outdoor Wellness to join their team.
The Program Manager of Outdoor Wellness will lead, inspire, and manage outdoor trips and programming, gear rentals, and risk management for outdoor activities and general risk management oversite for the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC). This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Outdoor Wellness including hiring, training and providing supervision to student staff. In addition, the position will respond to the changing needs and values of UW Bothell’s and Cascadia College’s increasingly multicultural and underrepresented student population.
This position promotes and facilitates effective communication and collaboration across the department, division, university and community partners. Outdoor Wellness programs create a sense of belonging for a vast number of University of Washington Bothell and Cascadia College students, while offering high-impact learning environments for students to develop healthy and mindful habits. This position is key to the development and implementation of Outdoor programming initiatives that support an inclusive environment to educate our campus community to live long active lives. Outdoor Wellness programming promotes leadership, community, holistic wellness, innovation, and self-efficacy that positively impacts the campus by building an engaging and health community.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Program Management and Student Advising
+ Manages daily operations of the Outdoor program and the services office, including reviewing and approving trip proposals, trip logistics, managing equipment rentals, promoting programs and services, and maintaining third party affiliations with established vendors.
+ Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, supervises and continually evaluate Outdoor student staff; develops and maintains strong customer service skills of student staff, applying advising techniques and knowledge of the student development process in identifying support resources and services appropriate to student needs.
+ Coordinate and collaborate with other departments to create inclusive programs that promote and celebrate diversity for students in the outdoors.
+ Respond to the changing needs and values of UW Bothell’s and Cascadia College’s increasingly multicultural and underrepresented student population.
+ Assess outdoor equipment use trends, evaluate equipment condition annually, plan a maintenance and lifecycle replacement schedule and procure all capital purchases.
+ Ensure all Outdoor staff receive and maintain the necessary training and certifications throughout the calendar year, including, but not limited to, Wilderness First Aid (WFA), driver training, and safety seminars.
+ Develop, assess, and revise learning outcomes for student staff and the program under the direction of the Director of the Activities and Recreation Center.
+ Perform ongoing and period assessment of the Outdoor program, staff, and services offered, with an annual report to the Director of Activities and Recreation Center.
+ Lead weekly meetings with student staff to focus on team building and discuss trip planning; conduct one-on-ones with student staff to debrief from trips and check in on their wellbeing.Administrative and Risk Management
+ Responsible for risk management including the appropriate training of employees and users, assessing the condition of facilities and equipment, and ensuring proper travel-related procedures; within established parameters, designs and implements experiences for persons of all backgrounds, ability and skill levels, and provides accommodations as needed.
+ Coordinate and administer a comprehensive risk management plan for Outdoor program, including conducting regular audits, ensuring programs and equipment are operating according to industry standards and best practices.
+ Review, revise, and enforce policies and procedures, including incident response protocols, to ensure all are aligned with institutional priorities and kept in compliance with the industry best practices for risk management and Washington Health Code.
+ Educate and empower students and staff to improve risk management practices, including understanding and navigating departmental policies, institutional procedures, and protocols put in place to proactively mitigate risk.
+ Administers and schedules educational programming certification throughout the calendar year for ARC staff: ensures that all student staff are certified in appropriate areas as needed.
+ Provide managerial and leadership experiences, and additionally create and promote professional development opportunities for student and professional staff.
+ Prepare and monitor annual budget, program and equipment purchases, partnership agreements, etc.; Responsible for ordering, maintaining, inventory, and secure storage of equipment and services related to program area.Other duties as assigned
+ Assist in the overall evaluation of the Activities and Recreation Center.
+ Serve and participate on University committees as assigned.
+ Performs other duties as assigned. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Environmental Science, human development, sports management/administration, or a related field.
+ Minimum of one year of experience with student or volunteer supervision, and leadership development or relevant experience. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Strong understanding of risk management principles and industry standards for outdoor recreation.
+ An understanding of outdoor recreation within the context of culture.
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presentations and demonstrated field experience facilitating teambuilding.
+ Strong organizational and planning skills.
+ Fiscal management and program implementation experience.
+ Demonstrated knowledge and experience in outdoor equipment usage and maintenance.
+ Wilderness First Responder (WFR) and adult First Aid/CPR/AED Certification required within 90 days of hire and maintained throughout employment.
+ Valid driver’s license upon the first day of employment with a minimum of two years of driving experience and a clean driving record. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Master’s degree in recreation administration, higher education/student affairs, or a closely related discipline.
+ Experience in additional outdoor pursuits, including, but not limited to: mountain biking, sea kayaking, alpine skiing, snowboarding, nordic skiing, fly fishing, etc.
+ Experience working professionally with collegiate outdoor programs, outdoor pre-orientation programs, and/or outdoor education programs such as Outward Bound, NOLS, or High Mountain Institute.
+ First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor Certification. **CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT**
+ A work schedule that fluctuates due to after-hours activities, meetings, and events is common.
+ The Program Manager is expected to attend major student activities and events held on campus and in the local community.
+ The Program Manager has regular and frequent contact with students, as well as frequent contact with faculty, staff, and administrators.
