Hampshire College, part of the Five College Consortium and a leader in progressive liberal arts education, is seeking a creative and resourceful Assistant Director of Institutional Research to help us understand the educational efforts on campus—and why they matter. We’re looking for a creative thinker who’s not afraid to roll up their sleeves, dig into messy data, ask the right questions, and advance a culture of evidence-based decision-making and continuous improvement across the college. This is an ideal role for someone who sees institutional research not just as reporting, but as storytelling—someone who knows data has the power to shape strategy, uncover opportunities, and inspire action.

The Assistant Director collaborates across departments to lead external reporting, support accreditation and assessment efforts, and uncover insights that guide institutional planning and student success. The role draws on strong analytical skills, but also curiosity, adaptability, and a passion for connecting the dots. We value initiative, good humor, and a willingness to try creative approaches to persistent challenges. Working closely with faculty, staff, and leadership, the Assistant Director ensures that data is accurate, accessible, and aligned with institutional priorities.

Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is located on a beautiful rural campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. We provide residential undergraduate education to nearly 900 students.

    DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Key Responsibilities

+ Coordinate and submit mandatory data reports (e.g., IPEDS, state and consortial surveys).

+ Support strategic planning and institutional initiatives through research and analysis.

+ Develop dashboards, reports, and presentations that inform decision-making.

+ Assist in regional accreditation efforts by preparing data, reports, and documentation.

+ Partner with departments across campus to support data governance and data literacy.

+ Maintain data integrity and compliance with privacy standards.

    REQUIRED SKILLS:

+ Proficiency with statistical computing software (R, Python, SAS, SPSS etc.).

+ Strong ability to query relational databases and join data from multiple systems used across campus.

+ An understanding of Colleague or similar higher education information systems.

+ Ability to summarize and present data and analyses accurately, effectively and to varied audiences.

+ Excellent communication skills, including written and interpersonal.

+ Strong organizational skills and work efficiency.

    REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

+ Bachelor's degree required, preferably in statistics, education, social science, business, or other related fields preferred.

+ Experience designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative analyses with imperfect data in an education context.

Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

+ Knowledge of national context of higher education and liberal arts education, federal and consortia data-sharing conventions, and regional accreditation requirements.

+ Thorough knowledge of FERPA regulations.

+ Passionate about working in an organization that values and promotes diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism.

+ Demonstrates and supports a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

    BENEFITS:

Hampshire College offers an excellent benefits program for eligible employees such as medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement plan contributions, flexible leave plans, and many other fringe benefits.
