POSITION DETAILS
Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens **,** LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia’s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.
Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director of Athletics and Recreation will provide innovative and strategic leadership, program development, and administration of a comprehensive athletics and recreational program serving all students, with a creative and forward-thinking vision that will expand the athletics operation at the College. The Director of Athletics and Recreation will work cooperatively with students, faculty, and staff across the College community and provide leadership over recruitment of athletes, compliance, and sports information, and supervise all efforts to support the health, safety, retention, and academic progress of student athletes.
In addition, the Director will:
+ Develop and oversee policies and guidelines for all Athletic department operations, coaches, student athletes, and staff.
+ Plan, prepare and implement athletic and recreation budgets.
+ Provide oversight of the selection, supervision, and evaluation of all Athletic Department support personnel, including recruiting, hiring, and supervising coaches.
+ Prepare annual schedules for intercollegiate athletic teams, and monitor academic progress of student-athletes.
+ Manage the purchase, receipt, inventory, distribution, collection, cleaning, and repair of all equipment and uniforms.
+ Oversee the maintenance and preparation of athletic facilities for use by the College's athletics team and staff, and community.
+ Develop and monitor the department’s long-range strategic plan, using best practices and a strong commitment to internal and external data collection, analysis, and ongoing program evaluation.
+ Build a rapport and collaborations with multiple constituencies, including academic and service departments, students, and alumni.
+ Develop and oversee external funding initiatives, protocols and compliance.
+ Utilize technology and social media to expand current and evolving opportunities and services.
+ Maintain knowledge of NJCAA rules, regulations, and guidelines to ensure that all eligibility and compliance rules are being followed and enforced.
+ Collaborate with the College’s Title IX Officer to provide training and educational programming for all student athletes, coaches and athletic program staff.
+ Oversee physical examinations of all student-athletes and facilitate the processing of reports and insurance claims.
+ Collaborate with College communications professionals and the media on publicity for and reporting of athletic events and results.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ A Master’s degree is preferred (in Athletic Administration, Sports Management, Higher Education Administration, or related program).
+ Five (5) years of progressive experience in athletic administration, staff supervision and facility management required (preferably in a college or university setting).
+ Experience with aquatic operations desired.
+ Evidence of successful implementation of intercollegiate and student recreational programs for a diverse student population required.
+ Knowledge of NJCAA eligibility rules and compliance strongly preferred.
+ Must possess strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with attention to detail and proven leadership experience.
+ Ability to work evening hours and weekends.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, managing social media, and designing promotional and informational materials.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Provides administrative direction and oversight for intercollegiate, intramural and recreational athletics staff, programs, facilities and activities.
- Provides oversight for all athletics programs, facilities, and equipment
- Ensures compliance with federal, divisional and university athletics regulations
- Administers departmental funds and accounts in a fiscally responsible manner
- Collaborates with other College departments on recruiting and retaining student athletes
- Collaborates with College communications professionals and the media on publicity and reporting of athletic events and results
- Manages full- and part-time athletics staff
- Plans, implements, and promotes intercollegiate, intramural, and recreational athletic programs including varsity sports, intramural program, a range of credit and non-credit recreational programs
- Establish and maintain appropriate policies and standards for teams and recreational groups
- Collect and analyze departmental statistics and data and prepare and distribute reports as appropriate

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
$83,878 - $129,310
Salary commensurate with education and experience.
