    We are seeking a compassionate Veterinary Technician I (Orthopedic Surgery) to join our team and assist in the treatment of small animals admitted to our hospital. In this position, you will support veterinary staff and help to maintain a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (http://vethospital.tamu.edu/small-animal-hospital) .

    + Support Orthopedic Veterinarians: Collaborate closely with orthopedic veterinarians to ensure smooth and efficient surgical procedures and recovery for orthopedic patients.

    + Maintain a Sanitary and Well-Organized Hospital: Keep the hospital environment sanitary, well-stocked, and efficiently organized to ensure smooth hospital operations.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Associate’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.

     

    Persons in this position should possess basic computer skills, knowledge of veterinary hospital equipment, and the ability to multitask and work well with others. They should understand medical math, canine and feline anatomy/physiology, and be able to appropriately handle and restrain animals using fear-free and/or feline-friendly methods. Effective, professional, and positive with all individuals, including internal and external customers/clients, is essential.

     

    The well-qualified candidate will also possess a bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science, or related area, at least one year experience in a veterinary medical setting, and a certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT).

     

    What you need to know

     

    Salary: Starting at $19.11/hour, c ompensation will be commensurate to the selected hire’s experience.

     

    Schedule: The schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8am - 5pm, with some holiday coverage required.

     

    Please Note: Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc.

    Some of the Responsibilities Include:

    + Orthopedic Responsibilities: Prepares patients for aseptic surgery, serves as a scrub nurse during orthopedic procedures (including arthroscopies, TPLOs and fracture repairs) , and assists with scheduling surgical procedures and communicates to all areas of the hospital, including with clients and referring veterinarians. Ensures necessary equipment is available, supports the anesthesia service, and supports clinicians, residents, and students with bandaging, radiographs, sedation protocols, and orthopedic examinations.

    + Clinical Responsibilities: Instructs and supervises students in clinical techniques, monitors patients, providing physical restraint, collects and submits samples, assists and instructs with diagnostic procedures and examinations, independently administers treatments following clinician's orders, places IV catheters, supports surgery services, and assists other services as needed.

    + Teaching and Clinical Research: Participates in the instruction of technical skills in labs, seminars, and clinical and basic research programs as needed. Assists with record keeping and data management and instructing and training of veterinary assistants and student technicians.

    + Anesthesia Responsibilities: Maintains anesthetic levels and analgesia for orthopedic procedures, performs intravenous catheterization, monitors and records patients' physiological data and administered medications, assists in anesthetic recoveries. Performs and instructs regional blocks, recognizes and treats hypotension, hypothermia, and other physiological abnormalities, recognizes cardiac arrhythmias, recognizes and treats perioperative and postoperative pain.

    + Maintains Work Environment: Maintains a sanitary and well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical teaching hospital, restocks supplies and medical inventory, cleans and repackages items for sterilization specific to the service, and maintains equipment.

    + Training, Compliance, and Administrative: Remains current with safety classes, rabies prophylaxis, Radiation safety training, Infection Control, Aseptic Technique and maintains certification or licensure where appropriate. Ensures all hospital fees are correctly captured and entered into the hospital electronic medical records system. Assists with school and hospital accreditations and certifications; AHAA, AVMA, AALAC, IACUC, etc.
