    Position Summary:

    Florida Atlantic University is seeking a Counselor in Residence. Boca Raton, FL.

     

    The Counselor in Residence (CIR) is a part-time position offering many exciting and rewarding experiences. The CIR must reside on campus and will be embedded in the Department of Housing and Residential Education (HRE). The on-campus apartment can only accommodate one person living in the space. This position is designed for individuals who are passionate about providing mental health support and psycho-educational programming to residential students, for the purpose of helping them achieve their personal, academic, and life goals in a pluralistic society.

     

    In this role, the CIR will rotate after hours on-call to assist in managing situations where residential students are in immediate need of support, including domestic or interpersonal violence, sexual assault or other mental health concerns. They will also provide some support for mental health crises, while working in conjunction with CAPS after hours on call service and FAU Police (FAU PD). In working collaboratively with HRE, the CIR will engage with students in a format that is accessible, decreases stress, and increases resilience and coping. The CIR will provide daytime consultation services in the residence halls, help students identify and utilize campus resources, and community support that facilitates student growth and holistic well-being.

     

    In addition to supporting residential students and working in a dynamically diverse institution, the CIR will earn competitive pay, receive on-campus housing, and would receive supervision and acquire clinical hours for practicum/internship program requirements. A post-master's candidate could receive supervision and acquire clinical hours for licensure requirements.

    Summary of responsibilities:

    + Through drop-in hours, support and provide resources for residential students and resident assistants with mental health and well-being concerns. When appropriate, the CIR will refer students to CAPS clinicians.

    + Provide on-call after-hours support for limited scope of mental health and emotional concerns of the residential population, while consulting with CAPS after-hours on-call service and FAU PD. The CIR will carry an on-call cell phone and is expected to remain within the borders outlined in on-call procedures.

    + Provide at least four educational programs and workshops to residential students and workshops to enhance wellness, wellbeing, resilience and healthy habits per semester.

    + Assists HRE staff in designing learning opportunities around mental health and well-being for residential students.

    + Assist with the educational curriculum of HRE including offering ongoing informational groups within the residence halls on topics such as decision-making, self-management, effective communication, and interpersonal relationships.

    + Assist with training sessions for HRE paraprofessional and professional staff pertaining to all aspects of mental health and CAPS service, including how to recognize and respond to distressed students.

    + Complete necessary administrative duties including reports for HRE and CAPS, and documentation in accordance with CAPS policies and practices.

    + Abide by the policies and procedures outlined by the Department of Housing and Residential Education (HRE) and FAU CAPS.

    + Attend weekly meetings with CAPS, which may include individual supervision, training and case consultation.

    + Meet bi-weekly with the Associate Director of Residential Education, or designee, and attend monthly Residential Education staff meetings.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    A master's degree from an accredited institution in counseling, social work or mental health-related field required.

     

    Must have completed 1 year of graduate level coursework in the field of mental health

     

    Strong commitment and experience with diverse individuals and communities

     

    Demonstrate awareness and value of culturally responsive mental health practice.

     

    Demonstrate commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice.

    Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

    Experience providing support to young and emerging adults.

     

    University Counseling Center experience in a multidisciplinary setting.

     

    Experience working in residential living such as a Resident Assistant, Graduate

     

    Assistant, or Resident Director.

     

    Experience and interest in provision of community level interventions, outreach,

     

    consultation.

    Salary:

    $15 per hour.
