Description of Work

This position designs, prepares, and/or reviews roadway plans using CADD (Microstation and Geopack) for Division let, STIP, Spot Safety, High Hazard, and other Division Let construction projects. Reviews roadway plans prepared by private engineering firms for coordinate geometry accuracy, check typical sections, and Right of Way offsets. Prioritizes and assign projects to DDC Engineering Technicians during all phases of design such that the workload is balanced. Assists the Design Engineers during the process of plan development including processing raw data, creating DTM files, creating horizontal and vertical alignments, typical sections, summaries of quantities, pavement marking plans, right of way plans, and erosion control plans. Designs conceptual maps for the Division staff to use at public hearings for property owners to better understand the scope of a proposed project and as a support document for funding requests. Reviews and checks plans developed by NCDOT design technicians, private engineering firms, and other NCDOT units. Resolves minor to moderate design issues by determining possible solutions and consulting with the DDC Engineer with little to no supervision. Provides support to the survey party in the field during preliminary location surveys, deed research and construction stakeout as needed. Prepares and provides data files for data collector necessary for construction stakeout.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

+ Knowledge of mathematical functions (such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry)
+ Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications and procedures
+ Experience in taking notes, collecting field data and preparing routine reports
Additional Expectations:
Possess working knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and construction methods, materials and equipment. Communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractor's personnel and the general public.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate's degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
